Re: Williamson sacked over Huawei leak

This time the Huawei decision was leaked well in advance (to muffle the response to the official release, I guess) by the 'official' channels... so no sackings.

It is interesting that Chinese involvement in nuclear power, on the table not that long ago. was not raising such debates (undoubtedly it helped that the French had been caught cheating on the safety aspects; and may be we did not consider 'a' Russian offer).

Tugendhat's sovereignty comment, though, got echoes from the other side of the Atlantic.
" Republican senator Tom Cotton declaring “I fear London has freed itself from Brussels only to cede sovereignty to Beijing.” And the condemnation was cross-party, with Democrat congressman Ruben Gallego attacking “this penny pinching action”, adding “our special relationship with the UK has to be reconsidered in light of this.”

Nevermind; I would be more concerned about risk assessments done as what Waugh Zone picked up sounds a bit too self-congratulatory:

“Our world leading cyber security experts know more about Huawei than any country on earth, and are satisfied that any risk can be managed,” a senior Whitehall source said today.

Is this where I point out that some of the major US internet routers are every bit as compromised as the Chinese equivalents?

Well, yes. To that end, let me quote more from the risk assessments: " intel is transmitted via super-encrypted networks built by trusted homegrown firms and is nowhere near the 5G issue."
... as if superfast technologies would be reserved for phone networks

This one was only picked up because some data travelled six times slower than was to be expected "https://www.afr.com/companies/internet- ... 120-h184k4" and the diverted traffic was... for an internet security company, whose secrets were of interest.

And this is nothing new, just that exercises that would last 18 days in other domains can be done in 18 minutes in cyber:
"For about 18 minutes on April 8, 2010, China Telecom advertised erroneous network traffic routes that instructed US and other foreign Internet traffic to travel through Chinese servers. Other servers around the world quickly adopted these paths, routing all traffic to about 15 percent of the Internet’s destinations through servers located in China. This incident affected traffic to and from US government (‘‘.gov’’) and military (‘‘.mil’’) sites, including those for the Senate, the army, the navy, the marine corps, the air force, the office of secretary of Defense, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Commerce, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and many others. Certain commercial websites were also affected, such as those for Dell, Yahoo!, Microsoft, and IBM."
- the list, as to whose traffic, is a mere coincidence, of course
