Boeing E-7 Wedgetail (RAF)
Re: Boeing E-7 Wedgetail (RAF)
I think this is one of the more likely things to happen in the next defense review, its an easy win and free from criticism as they were not the ones to cancel the last 2.
I am more worried that we haven't seen anything about them in 18 months, not the best look when you are trying to get more air frames out of the treasury.

Know full well though that boeing would charge full price, if not more, for those two airframes to be added.BB85 wrote: ↑06 Jul 2024, 18:53 I wonder what the chances are of the UK ordering the final 2 airframes as part of the next defense review. Cutting airframes when the 5 radars have already been ordered is beyond moronic. You would think it would have been better value for money to complete the contract for the 5 and sell the final 2 back to Nato.
That is 4+ Globaleye's for the same price
Re: Boeing E-7 Wedgetail (RAF)
Sure, but then you've got to pay for the operating costs of those Globaleye that will need just as much new infrastructure as the personnel as the Wedgetail.new guy wrote: ↑06 Jul 2024, 20:28Know full well though that boeing would charge full price, if not more, for those two airframes to be added.BB85 wrote: ↑06 Jul 2024, 18:53 I wonder what the chances are of the UK ordering the final 2 airframes as part of the next defense review. Ultimately, Boeing sees total sales of about 50-70 Wedgetails, including the Air Force’s planned program of record as well as other E-7 orders that have been booked or delivered, Gillian said.

It so good to see the first E-7 take to the skies but it feels like it taken so long to get here.

We move one step closer to being the first E-3 Sentry operator to transition to Wedgetail.

It would be in the MOD's best interest to pump out as many as we can before it ends - Including NATO E-7's.The aircraft is expected to transfer to a paint facility to receive its RAF colour scheme later this Autumn, following more test and evaluation flights.
There have been recent reports that the RAF has prepared, or is preparing a business case for a full fleet of seven Wedgetails, but few would expect this to ‘survive contact’ with the Treasury.

Asking for a fleet of 7 sounds like negotiating tactics to get the 5 they originally wanted.

Re: Boeing E-7 Wedgetail (RAF)
We all know that three is nowhere near enough E-7's to cover the whole of the UK, let alone take part in any internatonal deployments!
Anyone, who's not totally biased, couldn't possibly back three.
But, equally because the previous order was five it would be just too psychologically humiliating to go back to five.
Frankly, ordering four is only slightly better than three, so that's also a non-starter.
And it won't be seven because that looks like total capitulaton.
To me it looks like six is the magic number!
But, then again, maybe the least problematic solution would be to transfer the three on order to the European NATO fleet, together with a suitable contribution.

Re: Boeing E-7 Wedgetail (RAF)
Is the RAF going to change the name or are they just continuing using the RAAF name “wedgetail”
Maybe you should call it after the U.K.’s own bird of prey
