Great video as always Xav.

Would RAPIDfire be an alternative to Phalanx of it can be linked into the ships CMS and FCS? Could it then also replace both Phalanx and the DS-30 guns on most Royal Navy ships, freeing up both space and weight? Maybe we should look at trying it out on say the rear mount on the T-31s as an alternative to he Bofors 40mm and its 3P ammunition.

We could then take the land based version mounted on a Boxer to supplement and compliment the PS Starstreak/LMM which should also be moved to a Boxer Mission Module, with a Radar variant with a but still equipped with either weapon system allocated as one for every four vehicles to improve the target detection ranges. OF course all vehicles would retain their optical FCS.

Having appreciated Xav's reports for some time and having just read his post on the South Korean Navy, I went back over his archives as revisited those from Euronaval 2020 and found some very interesting articles that other might have missed:
https://www.navalnews.com/event-news/eu ... ing-craft/
https://www.navalnews.com/event-news/eu ... ault-boat/
https://www.navalnews.com/event-news/eu ... e-us-navy/
https://www.navalnews.com/event-news/eu ... un-system/
https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/20 ... his-month/
The Articles on the Assault Boats I found particularly interesting given how the Royal Marines are to be transformed and the LCAT Mk2 is simply awesome, we should definitely buy some. :D

The RoKN KSS-III submarines are truly impressive boats. Their size, range, underwater performance and flexibility show how far conventional submarines have come. The fact that Norway intends to operate its new AIP boats in the North Atlantic as well as in its more traditional areas, together with the areas the Japanese and Australian Navies are operating their conventional boats surely makes them more complimentary to SSNs than ever before.

Very interesting video as always by Xav. I find the FDI most interesting though. If the accept the FREMM is the equivalent of the T-26, being a top tier escort, the FDI is the French Navy's equivalent of the T-31, a platform designed to maintain fleet numbers whilst being cheaper that the previous high end vessels. Like the Royal Navy the French Navy was forced to reduce the number of FREMM frigate it could order by a substantial amount. t make up the numbers is designed and has order I believe five FDI frigates, that are fully capable platforms in all three domains, air, sea and ASW. Against this the T-31 does not compare very well at all.

While I agree, the FDIs are being supplemented by 3 LaFayettes (upgraded)... so how does this stack up, in this compartment
... before going into AAW, where the last two FREMMs made up 'the number'?

The upgraded Lafayettes at least will have a reasonable ASW capability as well as a AShM capability as well. They will probably not operate by themselves, but rather provide ASW cover for Task Forces, complimenting the FREMM class. The T-31 have neither of these capabilities and are not suited for operations with other ships in a Task force. Allocating them to any LSGs formed is a joke in my opinion.

There is a big difference between "no requirement" and "not suited". The parent design has operated in task forces with other nations, so clearly the design is suited to it. Again, it comes down to the requirement. If that changes, the equipment it's fitted with will change.

Let's not confuse the build/ budget constraints with the capabilities of the hull.

Personally, I will be interested to see whether Babcock's can build to budget, which, lest any of us forget, is probably the main objective of the T31 exercise - to get the RN/MOD to specify what they want, to a set budget, and then build it as specified, rather than continuing to insert new features throughout the build, with the consequent drift in costs.

Which RN ships will have an AShM capability? Sounds like the answer is none outside of there embarked helicopter for some considerable time.

I thought the FDIs were being tasked primarily with equivalent of the RN TAPs / FRE role? Given the fact that the Hellenic Navy has jumped the FDI production line, I would have thought the 3 upgraded Lafayettes would be primarily Singleton ships covering these roles?

The class was built as global surveillance frigates
... so being considerably up-armed, they can now sail to 'hotter' places

My bad, yes you are right, and there is now a chance none will have such a capability until the early 2030s! The Lafayettes can probably do the TAPS role with their on board Torpedoes and Helicopter thanks to their Sonar, something missing from the T-31, which could only attempt that role by carrying a Merlin and operating as a lilly pad for its operations.
