(Jeff Head) 22 September 2018
Video description:
This is a video of a Royal Navy Carrier Strike Group (CSG) in 1/350 scale.

I had hoped to await a 1/350 scale model kit of either of the two Queen Elizabeth Class carrier, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, R08, launched in 2014, or the HMS Prince of Wails, R09, launched in December of 2017.

But no such kit exists.

So, instead, I centered it on the HMS Illustrious, R06, which was the second Invincible lass carrier, and the last of the three of that class that were built to be decommissioned, which happened in 2014 after the Queen Elizabeth carrier was launched. She was built from a 1/350 scale air craft carrier kit #14201.

The Invincible class are significantly smaller, and embarked the Sea Harrier aircraft. However, during their years they were effective. The Illustrious had a quasi-commissioning on her way down to the Falklands, having to depart before fully outfitted and before completing all of her shakedown cruises. She relieved the Invincible and covered for her, and for air coverage over the liberated Falkland Islands until the new airfield there was completed enough to allow sufficient British Air Force aircraft to be based there to protect the islands.

This group is therefore made up of the older carrier, and newer destroyers, a newer frigate, and a newer nuclear attack submarine.

The attack submarine is a Trafalgar class sub, the HMS Triumph, SSN which was commissioned in 1991. That class of sub were the equivalent of the latest, upgraded Los Angeles class US Navy sub which were called the ADCAP (Advanced Capability) Los Angeles class. She was completed from an Airfix 1/350 scale kit #3260.

The frigate is the HMS Kent, F78, which was commissioned in June 2000, and is a Duke Class, Type 23 Frigate which has been significantly upgraded with the newest air radars, and newer missiles, along with the newest Anti-submarine equipment. She is one of the most effective multi-purpose frigates afloat, and one of the most powerful anti-submarine platforms afloat as well. She was completed from a Trumpeter model kit #4544.

The two destroyers are both Daring Class, Type 45, destroyers, HMS Daring, D31, and HMS Dragon, D35, both built from two Airfix kits 12203. These are the mos modern and most powerful surface combat vessels in the Royal Navy.

The Daring class are among the most capable multi-mission destroyers in the world, and particularly strong in area anti-air coverage for carrier or any other task force. They are very stealthy and their biggest short coming is that they only have 48 VLS cells for thier missiles. I expect in any mission with any possible air threat that two of these very capable, stealthy destroyers would accompany one of the Queen Elizabeth class carriers.

I hope to acquire on of the 1/350 scale Queen Elizabeth carriers as soon as they come out. I would also like to acquire two Type 26 Global Combat Ship frigates that the Royal Navy now plans to build to ultimately begin replacing the 13 Duke class, Type 23 Frigates, like the HMS Kent that is in this group. They will be more modern, more stealthy, and almost as large as a destroyer, with themselves carrying 48 anti-air VLS and 24 anti-surface VLS tuber.

Alterntely, I could also build two of the Type 31 General Purpose Frigate that the Royal Navy also plans to build to replace some of the Duke class. These will be similar in size to the Duke class, but newer, more stealthy, and with ecen stronger ASW capabilities. There is no 1/350 scale model of either of these as of yet.

I would be satisfied with one Queen Elizabeth class with a deck full of F-35B strike fighters, two Daring class destroyers, two Duke class FFGs, and two Astute SSNs if it comes down to it, and will probably start from there if the carrier model comes out any time soon.

Please feel free to look at my channel at the other Carrier groups, Amphibious Groups, individual carriers, and other 1/350 scale ships I have...there are quite a few, including a two carrier US Navy CSG, a complete US Navy ARG (Amphibious Ready Group) a French CSG, a Japanese CSG, a Chinese CSG, and a Russian CSG ( soon to be on the channel too).
Here's his USN Carrier Group models:

A military museum has taken on the challenge of moving a British aircraft carrier completely by hand. Ashworth Barracks Museum in Doncaster was offered the opportunity to give a 17-foot model of HMS Implacable a new home after its creator died.
