Given China's behaviour in the South China Sea I'd half expect Japan to tell them to "jog on"

Fools. Why didn't they ask the RN do they need ASMs... :lolno:
Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

Japan is on track to deliver fleet of 22 attack submarines by early 2020s

Seven of the their earlier Oyashio class 82m 2,800T surface displacement received major refits to “almost the same level of that of the latest model submarine” (Souryu class, surface diaplacement 2,900T/submerged 4,200T).

In early 2020s UK will end up with 7 Astute class attack submarines (Triumph the last Trafalgar class submarines to be decommissioned in 2022), numbers verse capability, can make a case for either option.

Looks like IHI XF9-1 engine may be tested in the Rolls-Royce's facility.

They are also probably the most effective SSKs out there.

And would have been the least risk to the RAN had a modified Soryu got up, still not happy the French got up with the most risk adverse design.

Isn't the Soryu the class the Japanese are looking to install a shed load of lithium batteries in as an alternative to AIP?

Conclusion of agreement on collaborative research on the feasibility of next-generation RF sensor system between Ministry of Defense and UK Ministry of Defense

Heisei 30(2018) March 23rd

On 22nd, the Ministry of Defense and the Department of Defense of the UK signed an agreement on joint research on the feasibility of next-generation RF (Radio Frequency) sensor system.

This collaborative research is to examine the feasibility of the radio wave sensor system which the Ministry of Defense and the UK Ministry of Defense jointly can search a wider range instantaneously using radio waves of a wider frequency band. Based on the results of this collaborative research, it is expected that efficient research using the technologies possessed by both sides will be possible through subsequent collaborative research including prototyping.

Japan honestly have no need to build any further new carriers. They have two Izumo and two Hyūga class ships. The four "helicopter destroyers" that they already have could be adapted to F-35B. The Izumo class is the larger of the two classes and measures 248m long, with the Hyūga class at 197m long.

Skijump ramps and flightdeck heat proofing are something that the UK could assist with, or which Japan could solve on their own. They may not even want to use ramps and fly F-35B in the same manner the USMC does with the Wasp class ships.

Our country's ruling party(LDP) recently suggested to the government to build new 'multi-purpose defensive aircraft carrier' alongside with renovation of Izumo and Hyuga class helicopter destroyers.

I don't think this will be equivalent to QE class but indeed hope to get a similar one in my lifetime.

Next Japan will build a Multi Role Defensive "Stealth" Bomber, and Defensive cruise or ballistic missiles capable of hitting North Korea and parts of both China and Russia. The sooner they come out of the closet and remove "Defence" from the title of their armed forces the better, and it would send a very strong signal to their neighbours.

Great ships though as are all of them.

Two comments.

1: Options we see
スクリーンショット 2018-04-14 11.30.35.jpg
Looks like the default will be 8 Mk41 VLS, and the design around the helo hangar can be changed.

2: Frigate for JMSDF, for the first time. (actually second time)

There is leak (or rumor = not official yet) in Japan, that these ships will be designated "FFM", "Frigate + Mine hunting". If true, this is the first time (*1) using the name of "frigate" for ships built for JMSDF.

Actually the ex-US Tacoma class frigates was designated PF, in 1953-1972.
