Japan has been part of the maritime exercises where also Singapore is chipping in, to guarantee the freedom of navigation in the Straits, for about 15 years, only missing it in the year of the tsunami.

Freedom of navigation can be read to be a "weak" scenario, as China is currently as dependent on that freedom as Japan is.
Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.

Is there a reason why JASDF chose E2s rather than E3s when they wanted an AWACS? Cost perhaps (either procurement or operational or both even)?

Japan already has a mix of E2 and E767 of which were up graded not so long ago, I am assuming that the new build E2 might be just replacements for early E2, but don't hold me to that as I am only speculating at the moment as I haven't really looked into it.

Nono I meant why they originally went for E2s (in the 80s/90s I think?) not why they're going for E2s now ;)

Japan Becomes First V-22 Export Customer
Japan is now officially set to become the first foreign operator of the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey after signing a $332 million contract for five of the tiltrotor aircraft.

The foreign military sale – announced on 14 July by the US Department of Defense – is likely to lead to follow-on orders.

The US State Department notified Congress in May that Japan had requested a purchase of up to 17 V-22B Block C aircraft worth $3 billion, which agrees with Tokyo’s latest five-year budget plan.

Japan's JMSDF May Patrol South China Sea to Limit China's Claims and Island Expansions
Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano, Chief of Staff, Joint Staff of the Japanese military (and former Chief of Navy), declared that China’s unwavering stance on various territorial disputes and the number of artificial islands it is constructing have led Japan to consider patrolling the South China Sea and conducting surveillance there. Japan’s top military commander is on an official visit to Washington.

Japan's rising concerns have resulted in recent discussions as to whether it should patrol the South China Sea, and implement anti-submarine activities.

There have been reports that by 2030 there will be an estimated 300 submarines in this area ,apparently there are demonstrations that "large helicopter destroyers" configured with asw helicopters are needed to counter this .

Japan Defense Ministry Unveiled Details of "27DD" Class Railgun & Laser armed AEGIS Destroyer
Image
According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) request for proposal (RfP) to bidding contractors, the 27DD destroyers will incorporate a number of design changes compared to the first batch of Atago class guided missile destroyers.

First, the hull of 27DD has been enlarged to an empty displacement of 8,200 tons compared to the original Atago's 7,700 tons. It is believed in the Japanese defense community that the enlargement of the hull was conceived in order to provide a necessary growth space for advanced naval weapon systems that are currently under development in Japan, and will be incrementally added to the ships' arsenal as they are developed -- such as railguns and laser point-defense systems.

SNA 2016: Juliet Marine Systems in Talks With Japan About New Sentry SWATH USV
Image
During the Surface Navy Association's (SNA) National Symposium held last week near Washington DC, Juliet Marine Systems (JMS) was showcasing a scale model of its newly introduced Sentry small-waterplane-area twin hull (SWATH) unmanned surface vehicle (USV). Navy Recognition learned at the show that the US company is in discussions with Japan for a possible Sentry procurement.
...
Gregory Sancoff, President and CEO of JMS told Navy Recognition during the show "We are talking to Japan for about 20 Sentry USVs. They would be ideal for patrol and surveillance missions in Japanese coastal area". According to Sancoff, JMS recently discussed with South Korean and Israeli officials as well, but regarding the manned GHOST vessel. The GHOST is fitted with a modular mission payload bay with numerous military configuration options. JMS CEO showed us scale model of GHOST fitted with 47 vertical launch tubes for the Lockheed Martin Nemesis missile. He said Lockheed and JMS have worked together on missile integration for the GHOST platform. The Sentry USV is fitted with a similar modular mission payload bay.

Time for the UK & Japan to cooperate on a new future fighter?

All the F35b to the Navy eventually, Typhoons replaced by new aircraft?
