Yeah, the idea of a greater UK incorporating overseas territories died with Maltese independence.

No reason for legislative councils, etc. to have their constitutional authority neutered.

The territories can make their choice through a referendum and if they say 'No.'

That's democracy!
Surely the democratic option would be to offer a referendum if the democratically elected government of an overseas territories requested one. I'd contend that the British government imposing a referendum on self-governing territories is anti-democratic since it undermines the autonomy and authority of their government.

It'd be nice if metropolitan integration were to happen with our overseas territories but i'd only want to see it happen if the citizens of the territories wanted it themselves. It's the only way it'd ever work anyway.

A mutually endorsed union makes for a pleasant daydream though.

^ Same. I imagine there would be plentiful benefits for all parties involved too, mainland UK included.

Foreign relations fallout with the usual suspects might be a bit awkward though. Nevermind, unlikely to happen anytime soon so no need to worry ;)

I haven't launched a manifesto, I haven't made any demands.

Sorry if I misunderstood you, it appeared that you were pushing a position that overseas territories should conduct referenda on joining the UK whether they'd requested one or not.
Falkland Islanders had a referendum because they wanted to express their right of self determination. I see no reason for that desire to not be expressed elsewhere if so wished.

Democracy, see.
Indeed, and my point is that it is up to the democratically elected bodies of self-governing overseas territories to decide if, when and how they choose to express that right. Unless any of them request to be integrated in to the UK the idea is moot.

The only thing more ridiculous from him this week was his comment about Trident. I swear he is literally making up 'policy' as he goes along. Utterly and completely clueless.

The heat is off for a little while bcz oil is deemed less valuable. The recent find of half a bn barrels was consumed in a merger between two companies valuing it at £57 mln (OK we could do fractions, but that order of magnitude).

So, you could be Saudi Arabia for 50 days (500 mln barrels/ 10 mln) and pay £57 for the opportunity?

However, in realpolitik only money and opportunities in the pocket count. Off-shore related activity will go down not only in Falklands but also on the Argentinian continental shelf. And to weave the economies together by means of an off-shore support industry reminiscent of the Coal & Steel Union... everyone getting rich,,, will be missed at least for 5 years now.
- who knows where politics will be in 5 yrs time?

Corbyn has reportedly suggested a Northern Ireland style power sharing agreement for Falklands to the outgoing Argentine ambassador to London. He seems pretty determined to reward aggression wherever he sees it.

Michael Fallon to Become First Defence Secretary to Visit Falklands in More Than a Decade
Michael Fallon is to become the first Defence Secretary to visit the Falkland Islands in more than a decade.

He will head for the islands, where some 1,400 British service personnel are stationed, while the House of Commons is in recess this week.

But the trip is understood to have caused concern in the Foreign Office, with diplomats worried that it will inflame tensions with the new Argentine government and undermine attempts to improve relations.
