Interesting feed back from the crews operating them in a real war environment. I guess if they will be remaining in a fixed position they are easier to conceal inside tree lines and under camo. You cant shoot and scoot 24/7.

Are the crews unable to compensate for barrel wear in their fire control computers? Sounds odd to me that they are proposing changing barrels more frequently for accuracy reasons. This isn't exactly an unproven system...

Yes, but with modern fire detection radar and UAVs finding who is shooting at you can be done far more easily and rapidly, with the latter possibly able to directly attack any guns it finds.

Thanks for the information but didn't they let go off all the staff that work on the M777 line in Barrow?

I think quite a few were transferred to Dreadnought

Interesting that there is still a demand for new towed howitzers.

Towed 155mm could be transported using helicopters like Chinook, there is no mobile/mounted version of it capable for this. Even mobile/mounted 105mm is probably borderline if not able at all to be transported by helicopter. And 120mm mortars still could not match range of 105mm or 155mm gun, not even close.

Also towed 155mm is cheaper than SPG version, so if you need lot of guns it might be more budget friendly option.

Orders from the Army slowed down over the last decade, and the service ordered its final 18 guns in 2019. BAE delivered that howitzer to the service in February 2023, according to Lisa Hillary-Tee, a company spokeswoman.
BAE began closing its production line overall as it built the final guns, she told Defense News.

“BAE Systems has seen an increase in interest from across Europe, Asia, and the Americas in the M777 gun system,” the company said in its statement. The new contract “presents an opportunity to new and existing users to join a new M777 production initiative and take advantage of the benefits from a hot production line and economies of scale.”

She noted the company will likely build the first structures using some of its existing supply chain, plus internal capabilities.

It’s unlikely M777 production will return to Barrow-in-Furness because it is now almost entirely dedicated to the Dreadnought submarine program, she added, “but nothing has been finalized.”

That looks like a rehash that uses the same assumptions that others have made.
