Royal Navy General News

For everything else UK defence-related that doesn't fit into any of the sections above.

TERN does look highly attractive, we do need a proper VTOL drone for the carrier's, and potentially frigates, something like TERN could be a nice fit.

It is however quite large, putting it beyond the size and cost needed to make a swarm work.

Even four, flying in a diamond-shaped formation, would work wonders to detection range. Need not all originate from the same vessel.

And you can vector them towards a perceived threat; do the closer to the TF area by an aerostat, or even a kite (easier to recover).

Persistence is the key word here. It talkes about 4 (big!) helos to do 24 hr coverage, and for 24/7 you will also need to add a fleet tanker.

Or you could achieve similar results with 20 scan eagle type drones operating from a single auxiliary.

That gives the coverage and persistence, and when they spot something then send the larger, system to investigate.

That's sort of how ASW works, an unmanned offboard array enables persistence, then a big manned platform is sent out to investigate. Now just swap the towed array for a swarm is the foundation for an effective system?

Swarms work well with small individuals, that can be scaled into an effective system. You get swarms of locust's, not swarms of eagle owl's.

We have that UAV thread, but to tie thess two together, there is a budget within the RN for a VTOL drone/ plane with "unconventional" payloads
- the latter more likely to be surveillance stuff than NBC materials

Here's a question to think about, come Brexit May has said she'd like a quick and good trade deal set up with the US.

Now a trade deal with them would benefit our economy more than there's, so May might have to offer something to intice Trump in to it.

This is where it comes to this topic Trump wants other NATO members to up there defence spending, could this be something May offers Trump to get a quick trade deal?

If so in turn our economy could get a boost witch would be put in to the defence budget to keep our end of the deal, so hopefully this could be a way for the RN and the other forces to get the boost they need and a larger fleet

Navy battling to save £500m after bungled deal for ships
The Royal Navy is scrambling to save an extra £500 million over the next two months after wasting money on ships it did not need because of a bungled procurement deal.

Contracts with BAE Systems for five offshore patrol vessels are the legacy of poor negotiations by the Ministry of Defence and mean that navy chiefs must find new savings to balance the books, defence sources said.

Options include cutting the size of the Royal Marines, mothballing one of two new aircraft carriers and even asking the army to pay for “soldier-like” jobs performed by marines, such as guarding naval sites.

Enough is enough, HMG have to increase the bloody budget now. Hammond's autumn statement was based on growth forecasts (for both 2016 and 2017) that will soon be revised up so he should have the head room to open the purse strings in his first spring budget in March, whilst keeping to the prior borrowing forecasts

Unfortunately, I expect that's unlikely given the unpredictable nature of financial situation over at least the next few years.

Sorry, I regurgitated this in the QE thread. As I stated there, if HMG does still wish for a post Brexit Britain to have any credibility on the world stage, in Nato, with Trump, in the Brexit negotiations (via European security) then an increase defence spending is absolutely essential (mothballing a carrier would be very clearly dignify the opposite). Likewise, the spending can be used to boost UK plc and stimulate the economy (to a small degree)

The uncertainty generated by the process of leaving the EU gives the government a get out of jail free card on maintaining austere spending for a good few years. That'll only serve to make the conditions that led to the vote to leave worse, but that's beside the point. I think that for the government the carriers themselves will represent credibility on the world stage. That that credibility may end up being a mile wide and in inch deep seems entirely in-keeping with the empty rhetoric from the government regarding the UK's future place in the world.

Continuing from the carrier thread also. Absolutely disgusting. As I said I'd mothball POW then shout it from the rooftops in the hope of embarrassing them. Our only hope is for the forces leaders to start standing up to the govt and not toe the line. Otherwise I agree funding won't be increased and more of the same bullshit (that was even used in response to this article) about increasing defence budget etc will be spouted, whilst no cuts are made to wastes of taxpayers money like foreign aid. How can they justify spending any money at all on foreign aid whilst defence is destroyed like this and people here in the uk are in such dire straights? Utterly infuriating. I'd personally not give a penny to aid, though I realise this is more extreme a view than most! I've yet to see any hard proof for the lie about aid buying us influence. What does is genuine hard power!

For example - Was watching an old frontline documentary on the gulfwar last night and it was amazing to see the yanks and others talking about us as whilst of course a junior to them, still a major player in dealing with the problem and being head and shoulders over all others as the driving force in dealing with it after the USA. Nowadays we're nowhere near that and aren't seen anywhere near as important. Bush went right to meeting thatcher at aspen and was hugely releaved by her immediate support for military action. Anyone imagine trump considering May's support to be so essential nowadays or us being seen as such a major player? Goes to show what buys real world respect, influence and status!

They "don't need Rivers B2"?

What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.

(Forces TV) 22nd June 2018
A fleet of model Royal Navy ships constructed out of matchsticks has gone on display at Nothe Fort in Weymouth, Dorset. Its builder has built at least one from each class serving from 1945, right through to today.

So, First Sea Lord says that the RN now has enough personell for all ships, including the two aircraft carriers:

If truth, well done.

I believe that there are 34, but that only 6 (open to correction there) are actually in the direct RN chain of command, with the rest being used for joint committee/ liaison type purposes both within the UK and with foreign allies/ NATO etc
