Have any other J's been withdrawn yet, DS?

Several, actually.

The official passage of 30 Sqn to A400M should be near, although i don't know the date. Maybe Downsizer does.

A deal worth £110 million has been struck with Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group for work on the Hercules C-130J aircraft to ensure it can continue supporting British forces around the world.

The work will extend the aircraft’s out-of-service date to 2035 and sustain 330 jobs in Cambridge.

Sustain, or create, 330 jobs? The report I saw said create....

Sustain most likely, is the work at Marshall planned to jump such that they can justify the expansion?

Granted they'll be getting older and probably need more work, but we're expecting a drop of what 8-10 airframes? Wouldn't be surprised if that didn't balance eachother out.

Pie in the Sky thinking here. Just how knackered are the J's?

1. Would there be an argument for retaining some more. Using the UK aid budget, hand than over to DfiD ? They can use & fund them for aid relief.

2. Coastguard/UK border force. Upgrade to SAR/MPA song the lines of USCG ? Help enforce the maritime border post Brexit.

3. UK Spectre Gunship/Harvest Hawk style tanker for special forces support.

4. Hand then over to a joint NATO transport wing. Say based with the C17s in Hungary.

None of the above will likely ever happen but its something to think about.

Does anyone have a dummies guide (diagram/pics)to changing a centre wing box on a C-130J? How much of the aircraft do they have to take apart to replace it? Anyone know how long it is planned to take to refit all of them?

" the UK Ministry of Defence has confirmed [...] the government-to-government deal. It said the value of the sale is commercially sensitive and cannot be released."
- could just mean that more than the 2+2 deals are being negotiated
- none of these announcements say whether the planes come from the "to be retired" fleet or the "to be retained C4 fleet"

Up to 30m pounds for two for Bahrain and also two possible sales to Bangladesh. It was in yesterdays papers I believe. Some murmuring about human rights abuse as well in the article.

Any idea why we are flogging off the C5's whilst retaining the 'shorter' C4's - the article says they are more heavily used, the shorter C4's that is ?

"The RAF’s 10 C-130J C5 aircraft are being retired early, but 14 more heavily used, shorter-body C4 variants are being retained and upgraded."

The C.4 is the stretched one.

Janes is (depressingly) wrong. The C.4 is the C-130J-30 with the 15 ft extension. The C.5 is the C-130J standard length. The numbers for sale are correct though.

And I was using my hard-earned pocket money in the '60s and 70's to buy their previous year's editions... 5 p a week did not quite stretch to the sticker price.
