It does appear to be the go to weapon system these days for smaller craft, being seen as a real alternative to the more traditional OTO 76mm.

It appears from this article from James that Indonesia is interested in acquiring a type 122 frigate from Germany
https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news ... equirement
previously Indonesia acquired many of the former East German ships after reunification
A question would be why this single class ship when there is a program to build more of the Martadinata class ships that would require further expense for a different class of logistics

Building a bridge? Their Suraybaya yard is up the their necks in the current prgrms, so much so that some blocks for frigates have been brought in all the way from Holland, with all electronics installed (so fitting out seems to be even more of a bottle neck than metal bashing).

Published from Janes
Indonesia’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has published a seemingly ambitious list of big-ticket items that it is proposing to acquire for its air force over the next four years.

These include Dassault Rafale and Boeing F-15EX Advanced Eagle multirole fighters, Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules transports, and Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft.

The list was disclosed in the 2021 edition of a yearly publication for Indonesian Armed Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia: TNI) and MoD staff known as the ‘Leadership Assembly’. The publication, which featured opening remarks from TNI Chief Air Vice Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto, was released in mid-February.

Indonesia’s MoD published in mid-February a list of big-ticket items it is proposing to Jakarta for procurement over the next four years. The list includes Rafale and F-15EX fighters, as well as C-130J, A330 MRTT aircraft, and UAVs.

“For the Indonesian Air Force, we will refurbish our entire fleet of fighter aircraft and we have secured the funds for this except for the replacement of the Hawks,” said Prabowo in his remarks, in reference to the country’s fleet of BAE Hawk 109/209s.

“[There will be] 36 units of the Rafale multirole combat aircraft from France and 36 units of the F-15EX, of which an eight initial units are being expected and six of these should arrive before 2022,” said the minister.

In addition to the fighter aircraft, the ministry also included 15 C-130Js, two A330 MRTTs, 30 ground-controlled interception radar stations, and three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into a procurement wish list known as the ‘Blue Book’.

The list refers to proposed procurements that will be forwarded to the Ministry of National Development Planning (Kementerian Perencanaan Pembangunan Nasional: BAPPENAS) for funding approval. No details were provided about the planned UAV procurement.

Prabowo also said that the “next strategic and historical step is to establish a formation of 25,000 reservists [over the next four years]”.

The allocation of these personnel across the army, navy, and air force “will be at the discretion of the TNI chief. This is a strategic and historical step because it will see the establishment of 35 reservist battalions every year and within the next three years we will have 100 reservist battalions,” the defence minister added.

Prabowo ended his opening remarks with a projection that at least 98% of the items on his wish list would be fulfilled by 2024.

Comment
In Indonesia, procurements of big-ticket defence items typically begin with requests by the respective services that will be forwarded to the defence ministry. These requests will then be assessed by defence planners, with suitable ‘Blue Book’ programmes escalated to BAPPENAS for funding approval. .

Accordingly, requests that have been approved by the BAPPENAS and the finance ministry using funds allocated from the national budget or foreign defence credits are referred to as ‘Green Book’ programmes.

Prabowo’s list of proposed procurements are in the ‘Blue Book’ and it is unclear if funding for the programmes will eventually be approved by BAPPENAS and the MoD within the next four years. Amid disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Indonesia is expected to see its worst economic performance in more than two decades and its defence budgets over the next few years may subsequently be trimmed as a matter of prudence.
Colour me sceptical considering previous Indonesia fighter procurements have usually fallen over for one reason or another (usually money) but interesting ambition nonetheless

The first quote probably will change to "or" but does underline the conditions required: missile stocks and other essential spares to be "guaranteed" embargo free... or no deal

Some reports (and it is very early in the search) are reporting that an oil slick has been seen in the area.
Apparently the boat had been cleared for a dive in deeper water, not sounding great at the moment...hopefully all will be well.

The Singaporean rescue ship may take up to 3 days to arrive in the area.

Really not looking good, the oil slick was apparently at the location of the last dive and a smell of diesel has been picked up by rescuers at the location. Malaysia, India and the US are also sending help but time is running out...

Type 209 could have a crush depth at what, 500+ m?
Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.

Around that, there's always a little more than the stated crush depth, but it appears the sub dived in an area with at least 850m sea bed.

Who said that
A. the addressable export market for frigates is v small, and
B. that it is unrealistic to hope to offload your older/ used warships?
- the latter point probs with the proviso that in refurbing them there needs to be compatibility on offer, with the new-builds, at key systems' level
