Hull City win Championship Playoff Final and promotion to Premier League
Image

Hull City 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday
Hull: Diame (72 mins)

A Mohamed Diame wonder strike was enough for Hull City to secure victory in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley.

The midfielder's curling right-footed shot from 25 yards sealed Hull's immediate return to the Premier League.

Steve Bruce's side dominated what was a tense affair at times, with Diame striking a post in the first half.

The Owls struggled to impose themselves as their 16-year exile from the top flight was prolonged.

They had a late handball shout turned down when Jeremy Helan's stoppage-time shot appeared to be blocked by Michael Dawson's arms.

Atlético: Carrasco (79 mins)

Real Madrid win 5-3 on penalties

Real Madrid were crowned champions of Europe for the 11th time after beating Atletico Madrid in a dramatic penalty shootout in Milan.

Sergio Ramos' controversial finish put Zinedine Zidane's side ahead before Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann missed a penalty.

However, substitute Yannick Carrasco sent the Champions League final into extra-time with a close-range finish.

Cristiano Ronaldo struck the winning penalty after Juanfran had missed.

Barnsley win League One Playoff Final and promotion to Championship
Image

Barnsley 3-0 Millwall
Fletcher (2'), Hammill (19'), Isgrove (74')

Barnsley sealed promotion to the Championship as two goals in the first 19 minutes set up their League One play-off final win over Millwall. Ashley Fletcher slotted home after just 88 seconds, before Adam Hammill's 25-yard curling shot doubled the lead. Both had scored for Barnsley in their Johnstone's Paint Trophy final win over Oxford at Wembley eight weeks earlier. Mark Beevers fired in Millwall's reply from close range but Lloyd Isgrove's header secured Barnsley's victory.

The Tykes were bottom of League One in December but a superb run of form under interim boss Paul Heckingbottom saw them finish sixth in the table, and their two-year exile from the Championship was ended by wins over Walsall and Millwall in the play-offs

AFC Wimbledon win League Two Playoff Final and promotion to League One

AFC Wimbledon 2-0 Plymouth Argyle
Taylor (78' minutes), Akinfenwa (90'+11 minutes pen)

AFC Wimbledon were promoted into the third tier for the first time in their history after beating Plymouth Argyle in the League Two play-off final.

Lyle Taylor turned in Callum Kennedy's cross for his 23rd goal of the season. And substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa netted a penalty in the 11th minute of injury time after a foul on Adebayo Azeez. The Dons achieved a sixth promotion since their formation in 2002 by fans of the old Wimbledon FC following their relocation to Milton Keynes. Argyle, who topped the Championship back in August 2004, will remain in League Two for a sixth season, having almost gone bust in 2011.

England 1-0 Portugal
Smalling 86'

England concluded their preparations for Euro 2016 with a narrow win over 10-man Portugal in a disappointing friendly at Wembley. Chris Smalling headed England's winner from substitute Raheem Sterling's cross with four minutes left as manager Roy Hodgson's side struggled to break down Portugal, who had Bruno Alves sent off for a wild, high challenge on Harry Kane in the 35th minute.

France 3-0 Scotland
Giroud (8' mins, 35' mins), Koscielny (39' mins)

France rounded off their Euro 2016 preparations with a classy and comprehensive victory over Scotland. Didier Deschamps' side ran amok to underline their pre-tournament billing as favourites. Olivier Giroud answered some of his critics with the opening two goals and his Arsenal team-mate Laurent Koscielny headed a third before the break.

Slovakia 0-0 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland will go into Euro 2016 on the back of a record 12-match unbeaten run after drawing away to fellow finalists Slovakia in Trnava. Former captain Aaron Hughes won his 100th cap as a 30th-minute substitute for defender Craig Cathcart who hobbled off injured after being fouled. Cathcart was one of several players on the receiving end of tough tackles. Visiting keeper Michael McGovern made some fine saves while Kyle Lafferty had a penalty claim turned down.

Euro 2016: Home Nations squads arrive in France
Image
^ England's Euro 2016 squad

England (Group B - England, Russia, Slovakia, Wales)

The England camp touched down in Paris before a bus trip to their Chantilly headquarters 20 miles north in the Picardy region.

"The first thing the team will be struck by is the stunning entrance into the town of Chantilly," said BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis.

"There is a stretch of cobbled road which is a completely idyllic setting. There is the chateaux kept with its immaculate gardens and I'm sure security will be tight."

On arriving in France, Chelsea defender Gary Cahill said the mood in the squad was "nice, relaxed and calm".

Mayor Eric Woerth greeted Hodgson and his players on their arrival and said: "There is no better place for them to be. This is a small part of England in France."

The squad's reception included horses and riders donning ceremonial costume from the nearby Museum of the Horse, while hunting horns sounded as the coaching staff and players made their way off the coach.

England will hold an open training session at their base on Tuesday, with their first game on Saturday, 11 June against Russia.

Wales (Group B - England, Russia, Slovakia, Wales)

Wales were beaten 3-0 by Sweden in a warm-up game on Sunday and flew out to their French training base in Dinard after the defeat.

Manager Chris Coleman said he was concerned about complacency, with Wales having won just once in their last seven games.

They face Slovakia, England and Russia in Group B at Euro 2016.

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey said the team was "confident" they would improve on their current form.

Northern Ireland (Group C - Germany, N.Ireland, Poland, Ukraine)

Northern Ireland were one of the first squads to arrive in France, landing in Lyon on Sunday afternoon.

They were met by local dignitaries before police escorted the squad bus to their secluded hotel in Saint-Georges-de-Reneins and held a training session on Monday.

"It couldn't be better and the hotel is excellent too. The players think it is brilliant," said manager Michael O'Neill.

Northern Ireland will have four more training sessions and, on Saturday, the squad will have a work-out at the 35,000-capacity Stade de Nice in the build up to their first match on Sunday, which is against Poland.

IAAF leaves 'crack in the door' for clean athletes after upholding Russian ban

Russian athletes who can prove they are not doping have "a crack in the door" that could still see them at the Rio Olympics.
Rune Andersen, who led the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Task Force in Russia, said an athlete who had a record of clean tests from "credible anti-doping agencies" could compete in Rio but not in Russian colours.
The Russian athletics team, however, remain banned from global competition after a unanimous vote at a meeting of the IAAF Council in Vienna to continue the sanction imposed seven months ago.

Vladimir Putin says Russia's Rio Olympics ban is 'unjust and unfair'
Image
(BBC)
Vladimir Putin has said it is unjust and unfair that Russian athletes remain banned from international competition, including the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) decided not to lift the suspension, imposed after accusations of state-sponsored doping. Individual athletes can compete as neutrals if they prove they are clean. The Russian president called on other bodies, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to intervene. The IOC executive board said it would hold a telephone conference on Saturday to discuss the issue ahead of a full IOC summit in Lausanne on Tuesday.

"There are universally recognised principles of law and one of them is that the responsibility should be always personified," said President Putin.
"The people who have nothing to do with violations, why should they suffer for those who committed the violations? I'm assuming that we'll have a discussion with our colleagues in the World Anti-Doping structure and I hope for a suitable reaction from the International Olympic Committee."

The country was suspended by the IAAF in November 2015, after an independent World Anti-Doping Association (Wada) report depicted a culture of widespread doping, with even the secret services involved. After that, Russia introduced reforms including an overhaul of the rules, the introduction of independent testing, and anti-doping lessons in schools. A task force has been studying those reforms but a fresh Wada report, issued on Wednesday, made more damaging claims.

Although significant progress has been made to meet the IAAF's criteria, it said, work still remains. In particular:

The deep-seated culture of tolerance for doping appears not to have changed. The head coach of the athletics team and athlete appear unwilling to acknowledge the extent of the doping problem. A strong and effective anti-doping infrastructure capable of detecting and deterring doping has still not been created. There are detailed allegations that the Ministry of Sport has orchestrated systematic doping and cover-ups. Wada said officials in Russia were being stopped from testing athletes and threatened by security services. Rune Andersen of the IAAF said Russian athletics had been "tainted by doping from the top level down."The systematic doping that has been ongoing in Russia - it's difficult to pick the clean athletes," he said.

IOC vice-president John Coates said Russia's athletes should remain banned and not be allowed to take part in the Rio Games this summer.
He also said Russia's anti-doping agency and athletics body were "rotten to the core".

Meanwhile, Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva said she would challenge the IAAF's decision in court, claiming it was "a human rights violation".
Isinbayeva, 34, who won Olympic gold in 2004 and 2008, added: "I'm disappointed and angry. I am offended. Nobody fought for our rights and there are huge concerns over the IAAF itself and its stance on defending the rights of clean athletes. We are blamed for something we have not done. I will not remain silent, I will take measures. I will appeal to the human rights court."

In a statement, Russia's Ministry of Sport said it was "extremely disappointed" by the IAAF decision, adding that it believed "clean athletes' dreams are being destroyed because of the reprehensible behaviour of other athletes and officials".

IAAF president Lord Coe said "no politics" were involved in the decision over Russia's ban. He emphasised the unanimous nature of the verdict and the international range of council members.
