[quote]Found this Hallowe'en witch up a lamppost inside Portsmouth Historic Dockyard today.[quote]
Got Port & Starboard Leg Coverings on the wrong way round. Tsch. The crewing of the Navy today. Too much turning of the "blind eye" methinks

Re: HMNB Portsmouth (RN)
Found this old diagram of how Pompey's No.3 Basin, North West Wall and Fountain Lake Jetty looked when originally built in 1864. Interestingly, No.3 Basin was originally three seperate smaller basins (3,4 and 5!) which later had their dividing walls and jetties removed to form the present day one. Back in 1864, No.3 Basin was a fitting out basin, No.4 Basin was a rigging basin and No.5 basin was for ship repairs.
The old plan also shows that C lock (lower) and D lock (upper) are relatively "new" additions to the base and were added in 1913 and 1914.

The original HMS Pickle was the first ship (a schooner) to bring the news of Nelson's victory at Traflagar to Great Britain. The replica Pickle is usually based in Kingston upon Hull*.

Defence Secretary announces Type 23 base port moves
(Royal Navy)
(Royal Navy)
Changes to the base porting of the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigates will see some new additions to the flotillas of Portsmouth and Devonport.
Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson today announced a series of moves which will see the Royal Navy’s eight Type 23 anti-submarine warfare frigates all based in Plymouth, while the remaining five general purposes frigates will be based in Portsmouth.
The moves will see some frigates switching from one naval base to another, and will bring benefits to force generation, operational readiness, training and logistics as well as more stability for ships’ crews and their families.
The base port changes will take place during unmanned maintenance and upkeep periods over a period of five years, starting with the move of HMS Richmond from Portsmouth to Plymouth in 2018.

*The Brickwoods Trophy competition is different to the more famous Command Rules Field Gun, as its done on a completely flat course without walls, wires or chasms.
More: http://www.brickwoods.co.uk/SirJohn.htmlThe Brickwoods Trophy is named after Sir John Brickwood, 1st Baronet Brickwood of Portsmouth (1852-1932) who owned the large and successful Portsmouth-based Brickwoods Brewery. Many of the Brickwood Brewery pubs still stand in Portsmouth today, although all are now under new ownerships. Sir John Brickwood was also chairman of Portsmouth's chamber of commerce and also a big sports enthusiast, creating the Brickwoods Trophy competition exclusively for Portsmouth based field gun teams. Sir John Brickwood was also the founding father and first chairman of Portsmouth Football Club, which he founded in 1898.
Re: HMNB Portsmouth (RN)
Whatever that is, it isn't The Field Gun Competition. The cadets used to have a kiddy version on Whale Island and it's more like that, the new H&S aware Field Gun is unworthy of the name
