Janes reports on the "dipping of the toe strategy" with the Iranian navy raid into the Atlantic:
"two Iranian naval vessels that reportedly reached the Atlantic in November 2016 subsequently had to put into the South African port of Durban to carry out emergency repairs, Airbus Defence and Space satellite imagery shows.
The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy (IRIN) did much to publicise the voyage of its 44th Flotilla, which consists of the frigate Alvand and the supply ship Bushehr, as an example of its ability to project power into distant waters."
- the images were from 7 weeks later
- RSA doing busy trade in repairing everybody elses warships - ours included; HMS Clyde in Simonstown... is it a case of blistering barnacles (to be removed)?

Alvand? That's an old VT Mk 7, isn't it? Must be 50 years old

no wonder, then, that it likes it in the dry dock?

Re: Islamic Republic of Iran
Sorry - Vosper Mk 5, not Mk 7. The Iranians bought 4 from Vospers (3 still in service), then reverse-engineered them as the basis for both their current "frigate" designs (the Moudge and Sahand classes). I wonder if BAE is collecting any royalties on the design

Re: Islamic Republic of Iran
Ok so they take an F-5 clone and give it a new skin and say look we can build a stealth fighter that looks great going down the motorway! The only thing Iran has is manpower and plenty of explosives to make suicide vests. Everything else is generations behind other Gulf States let alone the West. Next they will be using grain silos to make fake ICBMs to scare Israel.

Re: Islamic Republic of Iran
First use of energy supremacy as a weapon (by the US, that is) in the making?
"Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih met with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington on Thursday to discuss energy security.
The Trump administration is pushing countries to cut all imports of Iranian oil from November when the United States re-imposes sanctions against Tehran, after Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal agreed between Iran and six major powers, calling it a “defective” agreement. "
Kinda tough call, to ask countries not to buy oil in a tight market... so will Trump (as per his tweet) get two mln more bpd onto the market, by November?

Iran launches new home made submarine.

Given the small size I can't imagine it can carry more than 4 torpedoes. How many submarines does Iran operate?Named the Fateh (Farsi for ‘Conqueror’), Fars news agency said the new submarine is Iran’s first in the semi-heavy category, filling a gap between the light Ghadir class and the heavy Kilo class submarines that the country possesses.
"It weighs 600 tonnes and enjoys state-of-the-art weaponry, including torpedoes, naval mines and cruise missiles that could be launched from a submerged position," the government's English-language Press TV said.

No, that is not a typo because Iran does currently operate the fifth largest submarine fleet in the world. Iran, traditionally has placed the majority of its military budget into its air and land forces. Over the past several years, the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy (IRIN) has begun developing new surface ships and submarines. The IRIN submarine forces have been, and largely remain, focused on coastal and short range operations in and around the Persian Gulf. The most capable submarines currently in operation are three Russian-built Kilo class diesel-electric boats.

Re: Islamic Republic of Iran
And the remainder are basically locally built North Korean Midget submarines, still dangerous as that South Korean corvette found out a few years back. Far from state of the art but useful in coastal waters.

Yep, it don't look like a torpedo hit, at least to me... The damage is too low.SKB wrote:

Report into previous attacks on tankers in the region concluded that limpet mines had been used.
Could be the same again.
Floating mines would be a major escalation, due to their indiscriminate nature.

Re: Islamic Republic of Iran
One of the ship is Japanese company operated, MV KOKUKA COURAGEOUS of Kokuka limited.
Kokuka’s CEO Yutaka Katada says “Attacked by two shells. First on the engine room. When the crews are trying to extinguish fire, another shell hit amidship. Then, captain decided to give up the ship. All crews are safe”.
At least, the crew think it is shell, not mine nor torpedos. (Not saying they are correct).

Ok, it's Fox News but it might be true anyway...
"a senior U.S. defense official told Fox News that the U.S. Navy saw an unexploded mine attached to the hull of the Panama-listed, Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous ship, one of the two ships attacked. It is the same type of mine used to damage four oil tankers last month in the same area - an attack senior Pentagon officials blamed on Iran."

CNN also reports...
"The crew of USS Bainbridge reported that they saw an unexploded limpet mine on the side of one of the ships attacked today in the Gulf of Oman, according to a US defense official familiar with the matter.
What that means: A limpet mine is type of a mine that is attached to side of a hull using magnets.
Limpet mines were also suspected d to be used in the May attack on four oil tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE concluded that a "state actor" is the most likely culprit and chemical analysis of the debris recovered in May revealed "it was highly likely that limpet mines' were deployed."

Re: Islamic Republic of Iran
Though it doesn't really take much for me to suspect the Iranian regime when something awful happens in that region, this does seem rather brazen even for them.
No doubt it fits their bullying behaviour in the gulf and was likely carried out by their special forces, but until a month ago the Iranians appeared to be giving Trump's erratic behaviour quite a wide berth.
Could these attacks perhaps indicate that the Ayatollah/Revolutionary Guards and the secular government are not singing from the same hymn sheet?

Re: Islamic Republic of Iran
I wonder if we could see the Revolutionary Guard coming into conflict with the regular Iranian Army, Navy and Air Force as the more liberal Government tries to reign them and the more extremist religious figures in to prevent things escalating? Could we see internal conflict/civil war in Iran rather than a conflict with Saudi Arabia and its US allies?
