Re: Hellenic Armed Forces (Greece)
Not a modern ship, but it's nice to see her: Greek navy old battlecruiser Georgi Averoff ( 107-years old ) returns to Athens after refit
Georgios Averof was refurbished in a shipyard in Skaramangas with maintenance funds covered by sponsorships.
The battle cruiser was named after Georgios Averof, a Greek businessman who paid for 1/3 of the ship’s cost, while the other 2/3 was paid by the Treasure of the National Fleet and sponsorships by Greeks from all over the world.

Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

Great old girl, but actually an Armoured Cruiser built by Italy to the same design as their Pisa class. Armed with 4x 10" and 8x 7.5" guns. One of the best Armoured Cruiser designs produced by any nation.

Re: Hellenic Armed Forces (Greece)
They were fishing for F-35 in response to TF-X only a few months ago I believe. Fairly bold appetites considering the budget.

Well, actually, Erdogan slashed Turkish military budget, especially for Navy.muttbutt wrote:If you had Turkey for a neighbour especially these days, you'd find the cash.abc123 wrote:Have they figured out how to pay for them?dmereifield wrote:Greece looking to buy 2 FREMM

Trouble is, they want to have 1:1 parity with Turkey ( or something like that ), but they have neither the population or economy to do that. Not to mention this pesky crisis lase 10 years...Defiance wrote:They were fishing for F-35 in response to TF-X only a few months ago I believe. Fairly bold appetites considering the budget.

Re: Hellenic Armed Forces (Greece)
XAV has an update which also includes the detail that Greece is investigating a "2+2" deal that would include two FREMMs and 2 smaller combatants (Gowind or FTI variant). As to money:abc123 wrote:Have they figured out how to pay for them?dmereifield wrote:Greece looking to buy 2 FREMM

This all seems like a very reasonable and sensibly scoped move to bring the Greeks some new ships in a tough time. Hope it comes together for them.Funding could come from the earnings on Greek bonds that France bought in the previous years and has not yet returned to Greece. During the previous years of the economic crisis, Eurozone countries bought Greek bonds and agreed that they would return any earnings. However, these earnings have not yet been returned to Greece despite the agreement. So it appears that France could pay these earnings back through the frigates.

So can we get RBS and HSBC to buy the T-31's as pay back for bailing them out last decade?
Re: Hellenic Armed Forces (Greece)
RBS and Lloyds, I think you mean. HSBC didn't participate in the bail-out (neither did Barclay's, Abbey, Clydesdale, Nationwide or Standard Chartered), though they were eligible.

Agreed.Qwerty wrote:It’s all they can afford.
Better than nothing.
But, they might get something smaller, like CN-295 MPA or similar?
500 mil. USD isn't so small amount of money...

Norway, Sweden and Finland (all have rocky, broken up coastlines, like Greece) have had the pattern for decades https://i.pinimg.com/474x/4a/c0/a6/4ac0 ... gn.jpg?b=t

Greek Navy had some plans to buy two Perry-class frigates from Royal Australian Navy, but it seems that won't happen.

The trouble seems to be whether the missiles ( SM-2 and ESSM ) will be included.

Do the Greeks still have those very large Russian built hovercraft operational?
