The concluding remark about putting logs points in 'favourable' places was interesting
... as La Reunion and Noumea are indeed quite far apart

Perth? Share the jetty we have (been allocated) in Singapore?
Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.

Seems about the right size in my opinion. The Fire Scout is now basically an unmanned Jet Ranger compared to its smaller initial prototypes which is too big, and will end up replacing a manned platform rather than complimenting it on an Escort.

Isn't Leonardo's programme an unmanned A109 or something similar? That maybe OK if its has a major portion of the boom able to be folded, but the Airbus programme seems to have some promise and I think the RN should keep a close eye on it moving forward.

Have they figured out how to finance them?
Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

The bigger picture here is the RN's push to get UAV's on to its patrol ships without having to buy anything right now there are a lot of good projects out there now like Airbus and Hero which show good promise this allows the RN to start working with UAV's and watch these programs at the same time

With 4 of the 5 B2's to be deployed overseas it would be good to see a containerized system

https://www.airbus.com/newsroom/news/en ... MRTTs.html

The rapid transfer of French military forces over long distances – and the ability to arrive ready for immediate, high-intensity operations – was demonstrated by a mission from France to the South Pacific, with airlift and aerial refuelling support from Airbus-built A400M and A330 MRTT aircraft.

Two A400M airlifters and two A330 Multi Role Tanker Transports from the French Air and Space Force’s inventory were involved in the June-July mission, which validated the country’s ability to protect its citizens and the farthest territories. This showed how a French force projection could reach Polynesia in less than 48 hours, with sustained air operations performed on arrival.

Where did they made the refueling and rest stops?

A single stop at Travis airforce base on the way out.

What is noteworthy is the lack of support for France from the other major EU players: Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Stockholm etc etc the silence is deafening.

It's also unclear what levers Paris has got left over the UK; its hardline stance towards Brexit Britain on City access to EU financial markets, NI protocol, and Galileo means that it's got little left to meaningfully retaliate with. It might conceivably of course withdraw from the Lancaster House accords, but these are seen as being greatly to France's benefit, and of course it depends on the RAF for heavy lift helicopter support in Mali.

This is international power politics at its most brutal with Paris comprehensively outmanoeuvred and the EU's foreign and security policy shown up as politically impotent, with any claim to it having a geopolitical Commission being effectively shredded.

France: "We've been stabbed in the back by allies".

France the "ally", who were contracted to build two Mistral LHD ships for RUSSIA and sold Exocet missiles and Mirage fighters to ARGENTINA.

I notice the Swiss president has been uninvited from a previously arranged official state visit to Paris. This is seen in the press as a rebuff to its decision to purchase F35 rather than Rafale for the Swiss air force. One wonders also whether it's a pointed message to Finland which is currently running a competition for its new fighter.

However in future I think that France's reaction to AUKUS will make many European countries think twice about entering major arms deals with Paris: 'what happens if we need to change our plans too?' they'll be asking themselves.

At what point will Paris assess that its reaction may be compounding the damage to itself?

I really think France or more accurately the French President, has shot himself in the foot over all this. It cast doubts over whether supply chains for French sources equipment would be secure if a country went against a French option in future competitions. As for Finland, that competition is still a three horse race I believe, but France isn't in the running with the competitors being the F18E/F, JAS-39C/D and F-35A.

They've really gone over the top with all of this. Their DefMin has pulled out of talks with Ben Wallace this week over it.
