I find the french FREMM VLS cell differentiation between hulls quite humorous.

4 hulls with 2x8 Sylver A-43 and 2x8 sylver A-70 for ASW,

2 hulls with 2x8 sylver A-50 and 2x8 sylver A-70 for ASW,

2 hulls with 4x8 sylver A-50, for AAW/ASW,

so 4 hulls with the less capable&common (Cavour, CdG, 1 🇲🇦FREMM, 1/3 🇪🇬FREMM fleet, 1/4 🇫🇷FREMM fleet) 2x8 sylver A-43
(Mica VL, Crotale VT1 and Aster 15 but notAster 30, too small).

2 hulls with the more capable&common ( T45 class, Kalaat Béni Abbès, 1/2 🇫🇷FREMM fleet, 2/3 🇪🇬FREMM fleet, 🇫🇷&🇮🇹 horizon class, PPA/ Thaon di Revel class, formidable class, Al Riyadh class, Doha class, Amiral Ronarc’h-class, Kimon class and Al Fulk) 2x8 sylver A-50
( As with sylver A-43 but with aster-30)

2 hulls with not 2x8 sylver A-50 but with 4x8 sylver A-50, as they are the AAW variant, The primary role of the naval vessel is planned to be conducting the anti-aircraft defence of critical units such as the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and Mistral class landing helicopter docks.

And finally 6 hulls with 2x8 sylver A-70, basically the same as A-50 but long enough for MdCN/SCALP-EG/Storm shadow.
Also the only vessels to have A-70.

No, My point was about how many VLS differentiations there are in the french FREMM fleet, meanwhile the Italians keep it simple and all 10 ships use 2x8 sylver A50.

The French navy has ordered 7 new larger OPV's.
A bit over £100m each.
Initial 7, +3 in the future around ~2030

The Patrouilleurs Hauturiers OPVs will have a displacement of about 2,400 tons.
The vessels can accommodate up to 84 personnel (crew + passengers)
and have a range of 6,000 nautical miles.
They will accommodate the next generation RHIBs of the French Navy (EDO 4G and ETRACO NG) and HIL / Guépard Marine (H160M) helicopter.
The panoramic bridge offers a 360° view on the surroundings of the vessel.

The vessels will feature modern sensors such as the Bluewatcher hull mounted sonar,
NS50 surveillance radar
and IFF – friend/enemy identification system.
They are also expected to be fitted with the new Rapidfire naval gun system by Nexter and Thales.
Naval Group will supply the SETIS-C combat management system and the Shipmaster surface ship automated operating system.

For those who don't know the french 'Patrol vessel procurement world':

- France has the biggest EEZ in the world (nearly 2x the UK's, touch bigger than the US, and a chunk bigger than 🇷🇺&🇦🇺)

- These 7 new Patrouilleurs Hauturiers are to replace 6 D'Estienne d'Orves-class offshore patrol vessels used for OPV missions and Nuclear deterrence support, based in both Brest for the Atlantic and Toulon for the Mediterranean and the Flamant-class patrol vessel are a series of three 54 metre, 400 tonnes, patrol ships of the French coastguard used for fishery monitoring, search and rescue.

Other than general OPV taskings, It has been reported so far the ships will be equipped with a hull sonar, enabling them to escort submarines tasked with nuclear deterrence, as well as with the Thales and Nexter 40mm RAPIDFire CIWS. They will also be used for state action at sea, such as fisheries and traffic surveillance.

-6 Patrouilleur Outre-mer: offshore patrol vessels to be delivered between 2023 and 2025 and tasked with the protection of the exclusive economic zones of French overseas territories in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. Two ships each are to be based in New Caledonia, Tahiti and Réunion respectively.

-The European Patrol Corvette (EPC) program currently under development in cooperation with various European states. In the case of France, the acquisition of 6 units is planned in order to replace the French Navy's aging 6 Floréal-class "surveillance frigates" from 2030 onwards.

The French frigate has again intercepted a drone this time near the Norwegian tanker that was attacked with a cruise missile

https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/20 ... rom-yemen/

On the evening of Monday, December 11, the oil tanker Strinda (Norwegian flag) was the victim of a complex air attack from Yemen causing a fire on board.

The FREMM Languedoc which was patrolling the area intercepted and destroyed a drone directly threatening the Strinda. The FREMM then placed itself in protection of the affected vessel, preventing the attempt to hijack the ship.
The fire on board the Strinda was brought under control. No injuries were reported. The USS Mason then escorted the Strinda to the Gulf of Aden out of the threat zone. FREMM Languedoc has resumed its patrol towards the North.

https://www.defensenews.com/air/2024/01 ... 5-billion/

The new aircraft, meant for the Air and Space Force, will be one-seater versions and fitted to the F4 production standard, for which development started in 2018. The standard is focused on connectivity and includes MBDA’s Mica medium-range air-to-air missile as well as an upgrade of the Spectra self-defense system developed by Thales. Safran supplies the fighter’s M88 afterburning turbofan engine.

The jets are to received upgrades to the F5 standard in the 2030s, according to the ministry. The Senate has called for Dassault Aviation to start work on the upgrade — which might include a loyal wingman UAV based on the European nEUROn combat drone program — as early as 2024 due to the uncertainty around the Future Combat Air System. The FCAS could cost two to three times as much as a Rafale, while exports would be subject to approval by the German partner, senators said in a November report.

Until FCAS becomes operational, France will need a top-notch fighter to ensure the airborne component of its nuclear deterrent, the defense committee said.

The latest deal is the first major expenditure under France’s 2024-2030 military budget law, and will support more than 7,000 jobs across more than 400 companies, the ministry said.

French Defence Minister expresses his extreme frustration with the French defence industry over its very slow production rate of munitions etc and threatens requistion.
But, after two years of war in Ukraine it is unthinkable for our defense industry to not continue with its transformation.
He noted that because of the attacks by Yemeni rebels against ships in the Red Sea, the French Navy has already fired 22 Aster missiles, which has put the navy’s stocks “under tension” although the precise numbers of missiles left is a well-kept secret.
He insisted that delivery times be speeded up. MBDA will have to deliver the 300 Mistral ground-to-air missiles worth €150 million ($162 million USD) this summer instead of in early 2025 as originally scheduled, Lecornu said. The 200 long-range Aster missiles worth €900 million ($973 million USD) ordered in January 2023 will have to be delivered in the second semester this year instead of in 2026, as originally planned.
Raises the question of where the RN will be in the queue for replacing its T45 Asters fired in the Red Sea, not first that's for sure, another intangible drawback of buying foreign kit.

What would be the alternative? Buying standard missiles from the states? Strictly speaking MBDA isn't entirely foreign as BAE own 37.5% and there has been a certain amount of consolidation within programmes with MBDA so production of certain components has been concentrated in one of the partner countries.

As understand all Aster R&D was funded by France and Italy, though UK was a weapons system partner for the NFR90 and was briefly part of both NAAWS and FAMS from 1988, but dropped out and the latter which became the ASTER 15/30 with zero R&D contribution from UK and would note all production is carried by MBDA in France and Italy so why would not the French and italian Goverments not prioritize their requirements over any for the RN, as said its an intangible drawback of buying foreign kit, it was a consequence of RN/MoD reducing spend by not funding a UK replacement for Sea Dart, even the GWS 31 Sea Dart Mk2 was cancelled back in 1981.

If remember correctly there was also the GAST.1210 requirement for providing defence against 100km range ballistic missiles replacing Thunderbird and Bloodhound which came to nothing.

What is the timeline for converting the shorter range aster 15 to the longer range aster 30 ? as the RN will be using CAMM on the T45 wont this mitigate the situation ?
