New HD Video Shows PLAN Aircraft Carrier Operations Aboard Liaoning with Nine J-15 Aircraft
On December 25th, several official Chinese media (including CCTV 13 and CNTV) aired a TV report on the visit of the Commander of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) and the political commissar aboard China's aircraft carrier Liaoning (hull number 16). China Network Television (CNTV) then released some HD b-rolls that were filmed during the visit. It is the first time such high quality footage about the PLAN's carrier operations are released.

Jiangnan Shipyard in China Launched the Ninth Type 052D Destroyer for the PLAN
Pictures published by spotters in China show that the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) ninth Type 052D Destroyer (NATO reporting name Luyang III class) was launched on December 28 2015 at the Jiangnan-Changxing naval shipyard near Shanghai.

Three Type 052D Destroyers were launched in 2015 and this is the eigth vessel of the type to be launched by Jiangnan-Changxing shipyard (the ninth unit in total). Chinese spotters published on the same day pictures showing blocks/modules of the tenth Type 052D ready to be assembled in the dry construction dock.

The first vessel of of the class, Kunming (hull number 172), was commissioned in March last year. Changsha (hull number 173) , the second Type 052D Destroyer to join the PLAN, was launched just four months after head of the class Kunming but was commissioned much later, in August this year. Hefei was launched at the Jiangnan-Changxing naval shipyard on July 2nd 2013 and commissioned in December this year.

Meanwhile, as we reported last month, the fourth Type 052D Destroyer started sea trials (it should be commissioned in early 2016) and the eight vessel of the type was launched at the Dalian naval shipyard (it is the first unit for this shipyard).

China's Defense Ministry Confirmed the Construction of an Aircraft Carrier Type 001A for PLAN

Yang Yujun, a Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson, confirmed on December 31st that China is designing and building its second aircraft carrier "completely on its own" a the shipyard in Dalian in northeastern Liaoning Province. Yujun added explained during the last monthly press briefing of 2015 that this carrier, with a displacement of 50,000 tonnes, is designed to accommodate J-15 Flying Shark fighters and other types of aircraft.

It is not clear yet when Type 001A will be launched in the water. Some sources argue it could happen as early as the Summer of 2016 while other say it will take longer.

The Impressive Commissioning Pace of the Chinese Navy (PLAN) in 2015
2015 was a record year for the the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) in terms of new vessels procurement. No less than 3 destroyers, 4 frigates and 5 corvettes were commissioned into the Chinese fleet. Let's take a look back at the impressive number of units that joined the PLAN's fleet last year.

The guided missile frigate Jingzhou (Hull Number 532) officially joined the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) on Tuesday. A naming and flag-presenting ceremony was held to mark the commissioning of the Type 054A Frigate to the East China Sea Fleet of the PLAN at a naval port in Zhoushan city of east China's Zhejiang province on January 5, 2016. Jingzhou is the 21st Type 054A Frigate and is assigned to the PLAN's South Sea Fleet.

A picture puzzle for xav and TW: Have the PLAN copied the 27mm Mauser naval edition? That's what the two new units seem to have; compare with the third, older one in the background which has a much bigger gun mount and also a bigger supporting radome right behind it.

China's 24th Type 056 Corvette (Jiangdao class) Commissioned in PLAN South Sea Fleet
A commissioning, naming and flag-presenting ceremony of the new "Jingmen" corvette (hull number 506) of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) was held solemnly at the Yulin Naval Base located on Hainan island in China. The event means that the warship is officially commissioned to the PLAN. Jingmen is the twenty-fourth Type 056 Corvette (Jiangdao class).

Update 27/01/2016: Jingmen is actually a Type 056A, the variant fitted with a variable depth sonar. A photo of the stern of the ship shows the presence of a VDS.

China's Fourth Type 071 LPD Amphibious Vessel Yimeng Shan to be Commissioned February 1st
An article published on the website of the Chinese town of Linyi indicates that the fourth People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) Type 071 amphibious transport dock LPD Yimeng Shan (hull number 988) will be commissioned next Monday, February 1st 2016. Yimeng Shan was built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a wholly owned subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC, the largest shipbuilding group in China) as was the case for the first three Type 071 vessels.

Yimeng Shan was launched in January last year and started sea trials in September 2015. The vessel is set to join the PLAN's East Sea Fleet (it will be the first vessel of the class for this fleet).

A commissioning, naming and flag-presenting ceremony of the new Gaoyouhu fleet replenishment oiler (hull number 966) of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) was held solemnly at the Zhoushan naval base in east China’s Zhejiang province. The event means that the vessel is officially commissioned in the PLAN.

Gaoyouhu is the sixth Type 903A fleet replenishment oiler (Qiandaohu class) of the PLAN and the third one for the PLAN East Sea Fleet.
