Yes and no sign of them slowing down. How good they turn out to be is another matter, technology wise they are almost on par with the west, along with the technology stolen from various countries, I can see why the US wants to clamp down on various Chinese activities such as Tik Tok, and Huwaii.

With more than six hundred and sixty thousand Chinese students enrolled and studying in Western universities plus scientists from China also being involved in programs that assist their future projects at home in many ways the west could be seen as subsidising the research for the P.L.A.N

the amount and type of warships is one thing but as it has been pointed out the ships commanders are a worry some are getting command after a very short time at sea and some feel this could lead to rash or hot headed decision when under pressure

China's massive Yulin Naval Base on Hainan Island is one of the greatest strategic interests in the region. It is home to China's nuclear ballistic missile submarine fleet—the backbone of its second-strike deterrent—as well as other submarines. It sits at the northern edge of the highly contentious South China Sea. To its east is the gateway to the open Pacific and Taiwan. The most intriguing feature of this facility is the mysterious submarine cave built into the side of a mountain that dominates the southern end of the installation. Although I have seen satellite images of the roadway barges removed from the opening, we have never seen one with a submarine actually using it, until now.

Shipyard In China Launched The 25th Type 052D And 8th Type 055 Destroyers For PLAN
Image
The Chinese naval shipbuilding industry continues to demonstrate an impressive production rate in 2020: The Dalian shipyard yesterday simultaneously launched two new destroyers for the PLAN: A Type 052 and a Type 055.

As we previously reported, China shipbuilders launched a total of 10 destroyers in 2019, with the 24th Type 052D and the 6th Type 055 launched by Dalian shipyard on 26 December, setting a new record.

For the record, the first Type 055 was launched on 28 June 2017. In just over three years (38 months exactly), China managed to launch eight of those large destroyers (180 meters in length with a total displacement of 13,000 tons). What’s more: China launched 13 Type 052D destroyers (157 meters in length with a displacement of 7,500 tons) in the same time frame (August 2017 to August 2020).

In the past 8 years, Jiangnan Shipyard near Shanghai produced an impressive 18 Type 052D destroyers while Dalian Shipyard produced 9 Type 052D.

Wonder if China going for the old RN policy of having a fleet size as big as the next two largest navies and still win at this rate lol

How long does HMG suppose that it will be, before Chinese CSGs regularly operate in the N. Atlantic? Or do we really have to wait until then before HMG see that they should have greatly expanded the RN, rather than shrinking it. By then of course, it may well be far too late). If they were to form an alliance with Russia!.!?!?!?!!!!

I would like to see the Publics & media ( RN modern latest battleship HMS Trent keeps an eye on Chinese battlle group   ) reaction to a Chinese CSG in the west, especially with their 055 ships aswell, as said it might be a shock for NATO !!

But if we can play in the south china sea....wonder if they would though ??

Why else would China build such a big Navy. It is way more than they would need for the South China Sea. Justify it to secure energy and raw material supplies perhaps? Before you know where you are they will use it to subdue any opposition to them in the world, just like they do with their own population at home. When will our politicians wake up to the fact that China has learned from it’s lessons by the RN, USN and IJN. Unless we show them that we are not going to fall for it, I am certain they fully intend to treat us in a similar fashion to the way that they feel we treated them in the 19th Century. Unlike any “occupiers” from previous history, they also have the population size to carry it off!

There is is this earlier article that suggests why China cancelled two carriers
https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/ ... why-108671
https://thediplomat.com/2020/09/003-and ... -carriers/
The article on type 003 suggests a vessel close to the size of modern U.S.N carriers carrying the j-15 fighter a forth generation fighter the J-20 is not carrier-capable being unable to fold wings
The type 004 could be up to 111000 tons https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Type_004_aircraft_carrier that's where things get interesting

Chinese Ships Seen Mapping Strategic Seabed In Indian Ocean
Image
Chinese government ships have been carrying out a systematic survey in the eastern Indian ocean. Data gathered may be particularly relevant to submarine warfare.

A Chinese Survey ship, the Xiang Yang Hong 03, is currently operating in the Indian Ocean. It has already caused controversy, accused of ‘running dark’, without broadcasting its position in Indonesian territorial waters. The bigger picture is that it is part of a major effort by China to systematically map the seabed across vast swath of the Indian Ocean.

China Launches 3rd Type 075 LHD For The PLAN
Image
China's third amphibious assault ship, a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) known as Type 075, was launched in Shanghai today by Hudong Zhonghua shipyard. The vessel is intended for the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy).
...
The Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai already built the first two vessels in the class. The first Type 075 for the PLAN was launched in September 2019 and started sea trials in August 2020 while the second one was launched in April 2020 and started its sea trials in December 2020. This represents an impressive rate of one LHD launched every 6 months.
