Queen overheard calling Chinese officials 'very rude' - BBC News

The Queen has been caught on camera saying Chinese officials were "very rude" during last year's state visit by President Xi Jinping. She was discussing their treatment of Britain's ambassador to China with a senior police officer at a Buckingham Palace garden party on Tuesday. It came after David Cameron was overheard saying Afghanistan and Nigeria were "fantastically corrupt".

Buckingham Palace breach: Man arrested by Met Police
Image

(BBC)
A man has been arrested in the grounds of Buckingham Palace after scaling a perimeter wall, police have said. The 41-year-old was found in the palace grounds by officers seven minutes after an alarm was activated on the evening of Wednesday 18th May 2016, according to the Met Police. The suspect, who was not armed, was arrested on suspicion of trespassing on a protected site and is in custody.

It is understood that the Queen was at the palace at the time of the security breach as she had opened Parliament earlier that day and is also hosting a Buckingham Palace Garden Party today.

A palace spokesman said: "We never comment on security, which is a matter for the police". Police officers at the Queen's central London residence were alerted at 20:37 BST, the Met said. Commander Adrian Usher, head of the Met's royalty and specialist protection, said: "I am content that our security measures worked effectively on this occasion and at no time was any individual at risk."

Palace Intruder is a convicted killer!
Image
(BBC)
The man who has admitted scaling Buckingham Palace's wall and trespassing in the grounds is a convicted murderer, Westminster Magistrates' Court has heard. Dennis Hennessy, 41, of Wembley, north-west London, was on licence following the murder of a homeless man in 1992. He wandered the palace gardens for about 10 minutes before his arrest on Wednesday evening. Hennessy pleaded guilty and was jailed for four months. He admitted one count of trespass on a protected site and one count of criminal damage.

He had cut his right hand as he climbed over the top of the wall, which is between 8ft to 10ft high, and set the alarm off. Prosecutor Tom Nicholson told the court that he had repeatedly asked, "Is Ma'am in?" as he was detained. The Queen was in residence at the time, with the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of York. Hennessy told police he had "walked through the gardens admiring the view".

Chief magistrate, senior district judge Howard Riddle, jailed Hennessy for four months for trespassing and two months, to run concurrently, for damaging the wires of the alarm system.

Buckingham Palace to get £369m refurbishment
Image
(BBC)
Buckingham Palace is to undergo a 10-year refurbishment costing the taxpayer £369m, the Treasury has announced.
The Queen will remain in residence during the work, to begin next April. Ageing cables, lead pipes, wiring and boilers will be replaced, many for the first time in 60 years, owing to fears about potential fire and water damage. Tony Johnstone-Burt, Master of the Queen's Household, said phased works offered the "best value for money" while keeping the palace running.

The works will be funded by a temporary increase in the Sovereign Grant, as recommended by the Royal Trustees, who include the prime minister and chancellor. This funding change will require MPs' approval. Mr Johnstone-Burt said: "We take the responsibility that comes with receiving these public funds extremely seriously indeed; equally, we are convinced that by making this investment in Buckingham Palace now we can avert a much more costly and potentially catastrophic building failure in the years to come." However, Republic, which campaigns for the abolition of the monarchy, called for an "independent inquiry and full disclosure" into the use of taxpayers' money. The group said on Twitter: "Royal attitude always the same: it's theirs to use and ours to pay for. Time we took the palace back and turned it into a world class museum."

The Treasury said an "urgent overhaul" of the palace was needed to prevent the risk of fire, flood and damage to both the building and the priceless Royal Collection of art belonging to the nation. Pointing to the damage Windsor Castle had suffered from a fire in 1992, the Treasury said: "The restoration took more than five years, and it is estimated that similar damage to Buckingham Palace could cost up to £250m for a single wing".
According to the Royal Household, the palace's boilers are more than 33 years old and spare parts for them are difficult to source. Much of the wiring is considered to have the "very real risk of fire and failure", while the majority of the mechanical and electrical systems are at least 40 years old with failure an "ever increasing risk", it said.

Accession Day: Queen's Sapphire Jubilee, Gun salutes Monarch's 65 year reign
Image

(BBC)
A 41-gun salute has been fired in London's Green Park to mark the Queen's 65 years on the throne. Gun salutes also took place in Cardiff, Edinburgh and York. The Queen has become the first British monarch to reach a sapphire jubilee, after becoming the UK's longest-reigning monarch in 2015, aged 89.

A portrait of the Queen by British photographer David Bailey has been reissued for the anniversary. In the photo, the Queen wears sapphire jewellery given to her by King George VI as a wedding gift in 1947. The portrait was among a series taken by Bailey in 2014, with one released for the Queen's 88th birthday that year. In the portrait, the Queen, who is now 90, wears a necklace made of 16 large, oblong sapphires surrounded by diamonds, with a matching pair of drop earrings. Over the years, she has added to the gifts from her father with a tiara and a bracelet to complement the original jewellery.

It is tradition for the Queen to spend the Accession Day - as the anniversary of the day she became monarch is officially known - in private at her Sandringham Estate, in Norfolk, and return to Buckingham Palace a few days later.

I would say less than 10 years, the pressure and scrutiny she's going to be under I wouldn't wish on anyone.

But I like Harry, so I hope I'm going to be proved wrong.
