Re: Argentina
I hope we won't take after them and run rust buckets as subs

Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.

Re: Argentina
Do you think they'd accept the offer of help from our Submarine rescue operation or would they be too proud like the Russians were with the Kursk?
Re: Argentina
UK and Argentine troops work together with the UN in Cyprus so politically it is achievable.
If an offer of assistance was given by the U.K. (or anyone else) and the Argentine Government refused, it would be political suicide. IMO.

Re: Argentina
Submarine accidents hold a very special level of nightmare. Ever since I read up on the Kursk especially and what happened to the men in that incident.
Good hunting to all involved in the search.

Re: Argentina
No comment and nobody is asking. We're already taking flak from Argentine pollies (much to the chagrin of most of their population) about even being involved because of the Falklands, why bring in the politics when what everyone wants to see is the crew be rescued?seaspear wrote:Is there any comment on the approximate route in relation to the Falklands islands
Re: Argentina
I posed that question not because of any lack of sympathy for the crew of the submarine ,but that if the orders for the submarine are through the territorial waters or economic zone of the islands then future deployments of R.N abilities down there would consider this , certainly the certification process for an old submarine that had major works done on it and justification are a question that can be asked
Re: Argentina
If the route took it within 12nm there would no doubt be comment, I've seen no suggestion of that, have you?seaspear wrote:Is there any comment on the approximate route in relation to the Falklands islands
Why can't it conduct a passage through the EEZ?
Re: Argentina
There is some interesting reading under UNCLOS particularly articles 19 and 20 referring to naval warships and particularly submarines in territorial seas having to be on the surface during transit of such. I understand there is some contention on these articles .

So are you saying she entered territorial waters?
From the basic maps in the press it also looks as if she was far enough away from the FI that they weren't an option for seeking sanctuary from the weather conditions when problems started.
The elements are everyone's enemy, good to see the world coming together to try and rescue the crew.
Re: Argentina
The maps shown of the patrol area indicate the possibility of this , it may be up to the Argentine government to be specific in this certainly the area shown of the economic zone encompass that area shown that have been published as the patrol transit area
Re: Argentina
It is a tragedy to hear of this loss of life and I feel for the families affected.
It seems to me the Argentinian Navy posted many false reports of what was actually happening giving false hope to the families for what - to protect their service or the politicians? Very sad.
Is it known what the actual cause of loss? It appears if it was a hull breach does this indicate the refit was faulty or was it a power loss causing the sub to sink below crush depth?
Whatever the cause I cannot imagine a more forlorn way to die for the sailors.

Re: Argentina
Have they actually found the sub?
Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…
