Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Post by Halidon »

Defense News reporting that the Saudis are on the verge of selecting Lockheed Martin to build the four Frigates for their Eastern Fleet modernization program.
Earlier this year, the Saudis reportedly asked for ships armed with an “Aegis or like” combat system using a “SPY-1F or similar radar.” According to the knowledgeable source, the Saudis dropped their requirement for an Aegis combat system as too expensive, and the ship is likely to feature an enhanced version of the Airbus Group TRS-3D radar fitted on US Navy Freedom-class LCSs and US Coast Guard Legend-class national security cutters.

Earlier LoRs also specified an ability to launch SM-2 Standard surface-to-air missiles, and the ships are expected to be fitted with a 16-cell Mark 41 vertical launch system that can accommodate those and other weapons. The ships will carry two fire control illuminator radars.

The Saudi ships are expected to be armed with a 76mm OTO Melara gun, replacing the 57mm found on US LCSs.

State has approved FMS of 4 surface combatants.
The quartet — as described in the DSCA notification — will emphasize traditional anti-air warfare and will be built around two eight-cell Lockheed Martin Mk 41 vertical launch system (VLS) and an Airbus TRS-4D active electronically scanned array (AESA) air search radar.

The list also included 532 Raytheon RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM) which can be loaded four to a Mk 41 cell. With 16 cells per hull, the Saudi Freedoms will be able to potentially field 64 anti-air missiles per-ship.
The ships will also field the 1980s era Boeing RGM-84 Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles (ASM), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) sonar suites and torpedoes as well as an OTO Melara 76 mm main deck gun.

The ships will also be equipped with Link 16 datalinks, which could allow for greater interoperability with U.S. forces in the Middle East.
DSCA news release. Includes more details.

US Government Cleared MH-60R Romeo Helicopters Sale to Royal Saudi Navy
The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency has approved the possible sale of 10 Lockheed Martin (Sikorsky) built MH-60R “Romeo” multi-role helicopters to Saudi Arabia for $1.9 billion. This is another step in a major multibillion-dollar modernization of the Saudi navy's eastern fleet called SNEP II (Saudi Naval Expansion Program). SNEP II includes the possible sale of four Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC) Ships as well, as we reported in October.

Saudi Arabia Integrates Brimstone on Tornado, Though Yet to Acquire Missile
Saudi Arabia has provisioned its Panavia Tornado IDS strike aircraft with an initial capability to employ the MBDA Brimstone air-to-surface missile, but has yet to formally acquire the system, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) told IHS Jane's on 25 January.

Responding to a freedom of information (FoI) request, the MoD revealed that the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) received an initial Brimstone capability for its Tornado IDS fleet in 2015. Work was carried out by BAE Systems in the UK, with a small number of missiles being fired in Saudi Arabia for test and evaluation purposes.

The work was conducted by BAE Systems under the RSAF's Tornado Sustainment Programme (TSP) that also saw the MBDA Storm Shadow cruise missile, 1,000 lb 'dumb bombs', 1,000 lb Paveway II laser-guided bombs, and the Thales Damocles targeting and navigation pod integrated onto the aircraft. While the MoD confirmed that Saudi Arabia has acquired an undisclosed number of Storm Shadow missiles, it noted that the kingdom has not ordered the Brimstone, even though it requested the capability to employ it.

Well, Iran is across a substantial Gulf of water, so taking on an invading mass of "Panzers" might be just an insurance against a different political make up of the region's geography?
- or is it that the "Houthis" are coming?
- the Saudis have had second thoughts about their own tanks: the M1 turkey shoot in Kuwait made them cancel the Osario they had funded with Brazil. But now, in the more mountain-type of terrain they have come around to the original reasoning of more agile (medium) tank than the full-fat MBT for a shoot-out on a billiard board , between more or less evenly matched forces

From the above linked article:

"It’s February now, so I’m a man in a hurry here," Carter said in Brussels."
- last year, on TD, I put my money on a spring offensive
- what is one year, here or there, in a conflict like that in Syria?

Sorry, I had missed that. F-35, skipping one generation (pays for half of the next-gen... if it will fulfil all the promises. (Yes, or no, you will still have to pay the hefty sticker price).

In the series of oops... what's coming next: The distinguished Israeli Defence Minister resigns, and won't take the post of Foreign Minister because he finds that arguments of reason do not resonate with the team he would have to work with (he goes on to state that as for Bibi he has worked with alongside for years, with no problems so big that they could not have been fixed).

BBC carries a piece, but the Israeli media provide the full background.

Successfully intercepted by Saudi defence forces.

Intercepted on this occasion or not (and there have been many occasions prior to this incident where they haven't been) it doesn't speak all too glowingly of our Gulf "friends" that, even after having enjoyed months of complete air superiority, and despite possessing some of the most advanced aircraft money can buy, they still haven't been able to significantly degrade, or halt, the ability of the Houthis to launch strikes against Saudi territory.

Royal Saudi Navy Al Madinah-class Frigate Damaged Following Attack by Houthi Militia Off Yemen
Image
A Royal Saudi Navy Al Madinah-class Frigate has come under attack by Houthi militia yesterday while patrolling off the Western coast of Yemen in the Red Sea. The Houthis released an edited and low quality video of the attack as well as a statement mentionning a missile attack, but the Saudi-led coalition forces confirmed in a statement that the Frigate was attacked by three suicide boats.

NAVDEX 2017: Navantia Unveiled its Frigate Proposal for the Royal Saudi Navy

At NAVDEX 2017, the international naval defense exhibition which was taking place in Abu Dhabi, UAE, last week, Navantia unveiled the Frigate design it is proposing for the Royal Saudi Navy. Navantia representatives at NAVDEX 2017 told Navy Recognition that this Frigate design is based on their F-538 proposal for the Peruvian Navy (unveiled at NAVDEX 2015) and belongs to the AVANTE 2200 Combatant family.

"Saudi Arabia will buy five Avante 2200 Corvettes from the Spanish state-owned shipbuilder Navantia"

Disappointing, considering that BAE have the Khareef, River B2 and River B2 derivatives at various stages of maturity (Leander, Cutlass and Avenger) in this size and price bracket....did BAE bid for the work?
