Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN)
Albion and Bulwark were of course the last two users of Goalkeeper. The RN decided that the logistic burden just wasn't worth it for two mountings.
I think that Goalkeeper is rather stuck in the middle, in that it has a substantially bigger ship impact than Phalanx for perhaps not a great deal more usefulness (theoretically it should have much greater hitting power, but enough to make a difference?).
If you want to step up from Phalanx, then the 35mm Millennium looks a lot more useful than Goalkeeper.

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN)
Oops - I've just discovered that HMS Sutherland only emerged from a major refit last summer, so the photo I showed above was pre-refit. Does anyone know whether the replacement of her DS30B by ASCG took place during the refit, or did it take place earlier?
Considering it's a standard RN weapon, it seems remarkably difficult to find hard evidence of what the different versions of the 30mm mounting look like

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN)
Further digging turned up this photo of the ASCG on HMS Northumberland, which looks exactly the same as the one in my photo - so unless the Northumberland photo is wrongly captioned, the Sutherland did get ASCG before her refit. I think...

HMS Dragon gets her feet wet!
Currently seven months into an extensive maintenance period, the ‘flood-up’ evolution saw water surge through the dock gates and the Type 45 Destroyer float on the water for the first time since entering dry dock in October last year.
The refit, which started in July last year, is Dragon’s first major maintenance period since the ship was launched in 2008, and has included substantial maintenance to the state of the art electric propulsion system, as well as upgrades across weapons, sensors and communications systems.
http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-la ... n-feet-wetHMS Dragon is due to return to the Fleet in June, upon which she will embark on a period of sea trials followed by an extensive training package to prepare her for future operations.

Do we know what those upgrades consisted of? Also can't believe it has been that many years since she launched.

3 points-
1, If that is true he needs kicking out, there is no place for being that much of a douche in any modern occupation.
2, Until it is proven true he shouldn't have been name publicly.

In theory, they might have installed the below deck Harpoon bits. Dragon is on my list of the Harpoo-T45. Assuming, of course, that there have not been unreported changes in the plan: the other ship planned to get Harpoon was Daring, but they are still not in sight.
Rest probably small mods to light guns and MK8. Maybe got the new SLX Hawk-S thermal cameras for the light guns...? Dunno.

That's the bit that interests me - have they swapped the Oerlikon KCB for the MK44?Gabriele wrote: Rest probably small mods to light guns and MK8. Maybe got the new SLX Hawk-S thermal cameras for the light guns...? Dunno.

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN)
Thermal cameras have become more important as an anti-UAV device, as so many of them are small enough/ made of materials not to give a radar reflection
- you can always switch the engine off, but gliding or battery powered flight over the sea would be more difficult to apply compared to over land as the clear line of sight (by any means) for detection tends to be much longer
Tony, what do you think could be the driver for the change? Standardisation, away from KCB? The above (going up on the threats scale)? Claimed superior accuracy of the Mk.44? Variety of rounds available for different effect?
Donald (of T) had been counting that there will not be enough Phalanx units, even when the last will be back from refurb. And sure enough, they have been cancelled from the carriers (and ... any more)?
- I believe a brand new, self-contained Phalanx comes at around $10m
- the fire units we are talking about here must be dirt cheap in comparison, but then again their capability is up to scratch mainly against small boats, and beyond that a ?? (two of those to capitalise).

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN)
Standardisation with the ASCG installed on the Type 23s over the past few years would be the main reason. Although there certainly is a wider choice of ammo in 30 x 173 than in the Oerlikon's 30 x 170, and the MK44 is claimed to be more accurate.ArmChairCivvy wrote: Tony, what do you think could be the driver for the change? Considering that a few years ago the RN made much of the old DS30B mounting being replaced with the new, remotely-controlled one* with the MK44 as the RN's standard light cannon, I was very surprised to discover that the Type 45 had the new mounting fitted with the old gun. I presume it was a short-term cost-saving measure, but I've not heard anything about that.
*The ASCG still seems to have the "bin" for a gunner to the right of the mounting, so presumably can be controlled locally or remotely to choice. The bin does occupy the space where the missiles go in the version of the MSI mounting fitted with those, though...

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN)
Type 45 destroyers: UK's £1bn warships face engine refit
The Royal Navy's most modern warships are to be fitted with new engines because they keep breaking down.
In an email seen by the BBC, a serving Royal Navy officer wrote that "total electric failures are common" on its fleet of six £1bn Type 45 destroyers.
The Ministry of Defence said there were reliability issues with the propulsion system and work to fix it would be done to ensure "ships remain available".
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-35432341In a statement, the MoD told the BBC that to "address some reliability issues" it was considering options to "upgrade the ships' diesel generators to add greater resilience to the power and the propulsion system".
That will involve significant work, though the Royal Navy insists that the six destroyers will still be deployed all over the world.
But from 2019 each will begin to undergo a major refit that will probably involve cutting a large hole to insert at least one new generator into the ship.
The work will be staggered to ensure the navy still has ships to send on operations.
The MoD would not give any details on cost.

Diamond supports Wildcat deck landing training
http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-la ... t-trainingA New Year, a new challenge, and the new next generation multi-role helicopter, ‘Wildcat’ ‘Landed on’ as Diamond put to sea for the first time in 2016.
Deck landing training was conducted throughout the day and into the night for a 2 week period in January.
The aim was to support 825 Sqn’s trainee pilots and observers, allowing them to put into practice the reality of aviation at sea; a very different world from the steady and controlled environment of a shore aerodrome.
This busy time also enabled further aviation training for Diamond’s bridge teams, aircraft controllers, and flight deck crews operating in the challenging weather conditions day and night.

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN)
About time, its hardly the worlds most credible AAW platform if it has the reliability of a Fiat. The T45 is quite often unavailable, most notably from the ballistic missile test in Scotland, which was something of an embarrassment as the host nation. Very welcome news they are fixing it.
After anti ship missiles and engine upgrades the next important thing on the upgrade list is possibly those extra VLS.
