Unfortunately, with the additional running costs of the Typhoon over the Hawk, I think we might be down to the "Red Arrow" - singular

RAF Scampton to be closed and sold

https://www.forces.net/news/red-arrows- ... d-and-sold

RAF Scampton was also the base where the Lancaster bombers of 617 Squadron were based before for their raid on German dams in 1943.
A dog who belonged to 617 Squadron Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC, is buried in a grave outside of Gibson's office at No.3 hangar.

RAF Scampton is also the home to No1 Air Control Centre which provides mobile Radars and ATC for forward deployed UK forces. It comprises of 600 personnel plus families for those on married status. Will be sad to see this base go with its history and ties with RAF Waddington and Lincoln.

The 600 personnel is for the whole station, not 1ACC! Its not the mobile elements of the unit that are an issue, they have already moved twice in the last 15 years, its the Control and Reporting Centre that is the difficult bit. For a facility like that it does raise questions if a replacement would be operational for 2022. If the second UK CRC goes it will be a decision which will be regretted in the future. Contract changes for Project Guardian then......

I am not shocked that its going considering the state its in, the shame is that the decision wasn't made once the J6 hub plans fell through and that its struggled on. Still sad to see it go thought, great times there and at Kirton in Lindsey.

Maybe they decided that Scamptons Motto doesn't reflect uk policy anymore?

Haven't seen this anywhere else:
Three air bases have been identified as a potential new home for the Red Arrows air display team, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

They are RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire, RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire and RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire.

I would have presumed Leeming is the obvious choice. As noted on the Typhoon thread, it's unlikely to be seeing any combat squadrons again, so plenty of room for the Reds and their support infrastructure.

That said, Wittering has also been pretty empty since Harrier-cide in 2010 and probably offers notably better weather.

Amazed there could be any room left at Waddington.

Still it's a vote of confidence in the future of the Red Arrows, so good news (unless you live near Scamton and like planes).

Just a few miles away, plenty of space there as well.
