Bottom right one looks fantastic to me. Really striking, stands out, strong colours.

I've heard about this for a while and I'm 100% behind it.

I wonder what the RNZN ensign would look like then if they do change the flag, or whether they would just fly the national flag.

I recently read that the UK's Union Flag/Jack isn't actually the official flag. Instead, its a Royal Banner which has always been owned by the Crown. The Union Flag/Jack symbolises the Union Of Crowns and is currently flown as a defacto Sovereign State flag of the UK , defacto because no official UK flag actually exists. The Union Flag/Jack has never officially been passed through Parliament in a Flag Bill, meaning its status is unofficial.

National flags are a relatively "new" concept and only became popular during and after the revolutionary wars of the 18th century in France and America. Before then, when a British army of the Crown went into battle, they would fly the Union Flag/Jack flag of the Crown as a war banner or rallying symbol as no 'national' flag existed. Our 'Union Jack' has since then entered into the national conciousness and identity through its common use overseas and at times of war as an assumed national symbol.

There have been attempts to make the Union Flag/Jack the official national flag of the UK. The most recent Flag Bill was in 2008. So far, the Bill has only had a a first reading. http://services.parliament.uk/bills/200 ... nflag.html

As a Commonwealth country, New Zealand would need to use a new updated naval ensign, presumably with their new national flag in the upper-left canton of their new ensign. Other Commonwealth countries such as India or Canada who have changed flags, have their national flags as cantons in the corners of their naval ensigns.

Their new national flag could also be flown seperately at the bow jackstaff on a New Zealand warship.

Not my vote to make, but as a Sailing fan the black+white TNZ-style flag is pretty great.

I like the one on the bottom right. But the choice is not up to me.

I don't think they should change it, but of the four, the bottom right for me too. It keeps the colours of the 'old' flag and gives a nod to its British (and Dutch) history.

I am not 100% sure on that, but would make sense to do.

Did you know that during the Vietnam War the RAN was effectively fighting under the flag of another uninvolved nation, the UK White Ensign. this is what lead to the Australian White Ensign in 67

Australian warships regularly found themselves mistaken for their British counterparts and this lead in part to the now famous red kangaroo to be fixed to the funnels or main structure of the vessel when the executive officer of HMAS Anzac placed a red Kangaroo on the funnel to try and distinguish themselves as RN shipping during the Korean War

Kiwi's put a black (or dark grey) kiwi on their funnels too.

A new fifth option for a new flag has been revealed, known as the "Red Peak".

A NZ Green Party MP has 'discovered' the Red Peak flag also has alleged Nazi links!

The winning design chosen from the 5 flag ideas (the referendum is November 2015) will then go against the existing NZ flag in a one-to-one referendum in 2016!

It may be a possibility that the current NZ flag would win in 2016!

Polling seems to suggest that they'll keep the current flag by quite a margin, but personally I do quite like the red peak one as a design.

Creative genius flows through a lot of the submissions.

Interestingly, the bl**dy awful national anthem will remain the same dirge of lifeless noise. Change that and not the flag. Oh well, it's keeping the population distracted from real events.

New Zealand has chosen the top left "Silver Fern" flag (black/blue background) to go up against the existing New Zealand flag in a 2016 Flag Referendum.

Given how divisive "Flegs" can be good luck to them I hope they decide to keep the current one but who knows.

In recent opinion polling there seems to be overwhelming support for keeping the current flag. It's been between 60/40 and 70/30 against change since the referendum was announced. In the preliminary referendum turnout was less than 50% with around 23% of the electorate expressing a preference for the silver fern design.

Frankly, it'd be astonishing if there was a vote to change from the current flag.

New Zealand Votes to Keep Flag in Referendum

New Zealanders have voted to keep their existing flag after a national referendum, preliminary results show.

The referendum asked whether the flag which includes the Union Jack should be replaced by a design called Silver Fern, which won an earlier ballot.

The results show 56.6% voted for no change, while 43.1% opted for the new design. Just over 2.1m votes were cast.

PM John Key had advocated the new flag but called on New Zealanders to "embrace" the people's decision.

He was speaking after the preliminary result was announced following the close of the postal vote at 19:00 local time (06:00 GMT).

A final result taking into account late ballots will be announced next Wednesday.

John Key, the New Zealand Prime Minister who decided to hold the referendum despite an obvious popular preference for keeping the current flag leads the National Party, a centre-right conservative party. I don't think that he'd appreciate you mistaking him for a left-winger, but you're absolutely right that he like his Labour predecessor is a staunch Republican.
