MADEX 2019: HHI wins Conceptual Design Contract for ROK Navy LPX-II Amphibious Ship
Image
South Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) was awarded a contract this week for the conceptual design of a next-generation amphibious assault ship known as LPX-II and intended for the Republic of Korea Navy (ROK Navy).

HHI is expected to finish the conceptual design by the second half of 2020, with commissioning with Republic of Korea Navy planned for the early 2030s. The vessel, displacing around 30,000 tons would be based on the existing Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship (LPX-I project) and would be able to accommodate around 20 F-35B STOVL fighters.

That GGRM-5 is very interesting, the 100km range without using a sub calibre projectile is impressive, one the RN should keep an eye on for future assessment of its compatibility with the T-26.

Thanks for posting xav, Very interesting that the carrier will have large lift aft for 2 x F35b maybe CH47 chinook capable? I do think the blast deflector is a must for a smaller carrier, would she have roughly the same airwing as the Italian Cavour?

Re: South Korea

Posted: 25 Oct 2019, 23:59
by Lord Jim
Why is everyone obsessed with embarking CH-47s on Amphibs and Carriers. The platform is not equipped for sustained carrier operations and will surer substantial wear and tear to both airframe and engines if used as such. Yes embark them for a specific mission but these are not naval assault transports. If you what routinely embarked heavy lift helicopters you need to go down the CH-53 route.

Yes I was thinking for specific short hop missions, maybe special forces, get them below asap to eleviate the worst of the weather (personally I prefer the Osprey) but as you say it would make more sense for the already marinized CH53 for longer deployments, have the ROK got any?

Wouldn't they use this carrier for a sea control type purposes most of the time (uss america lightning carrier concept) ?

So South Korea and Japan are both pursuing compact footprints and 360° real-time video in their command centers, fascinating. I hope someone is able to do a study comparing them to the huge, theater-like SMC on a DDG-1000. I'd be very interested in seeing data on the advantages/disadvantages of each based on real-world use.

Hi xav, bet the jet lag is hitting you pretty hard!! You’ve been all over the place these last few months and don’t seem to have long between trips! Xanax at the ready I guess!!

I’d say there’s no doubt Asia is pulling away from Europe and the U.K. in particular and will have a clear lead over us within 20 years or less. Decades of under investment whilst others work hard have a price to pay. National ship building strategy and other poor attempts at sustaining our industry look fairly pathetic when I look at the investment and work going in at all levels from students to the top of industry, R&D, defence spending and more are all way ahead in SK and japan in particular.

A good point about how the general effort https://image.businessinsider.com/539e3 ... &auto=webp correlates with the ability to get things done in the military sector where Korea (ROK) is in the Top5 as for R&D absolute expenditure
- that is not easy to see as often the figure is stated as part of defence capacity improvement which incorporates also the "buying of stuff" related to the R&D prgrms

Well, at least it doesn't "feel like working" so that's good... but yeah, the jet lag, there is no getting used to it... I'll travel a lot less now, until early 2020. Time to re-load the batteries...

ROK sending a frigate/ destroyer to Hormuz, will not join anybody else's patrol.

Crew of 300 sounds high... is it bcz their designs are close to those of USN, or is it just due to shore rotation (bumping up the total)?
