Spain is going forward with Piranha V as their new 8x8 wheeled combat vehicle:

http://www.janes.com/article/54819/spai ... as-new-8x8

The fact that they're being made by Santa Barbara Sistemas was a big factor in the decision. The only other competitor offering to build in Spain was Iveco, with Freccia.

Freccia , even though excellent, does not benefit from economies of scale (the reverse: the production run for the Italian army has been stretched out for budgetary reasons, making it even more expensive. All in $6m a piece).

Spain did buy 22 of its big brother "wheeled tanks" though:

Baltic Battalion held a battle exercise against tanks and armored personnel vehicles in San Gregorio (Spain) area during Trident Juncture exercise. Opposition forces for the battalion were played by Spanish mechanized infantry battalion with armored personnel vehicles and tanks Leopard 2A5. Battalion used its organic anti-tank weapons, Javelin and Milan rocket systems against the strong opponent and fortunately had also an air support of Apache attack helicopter provided by United States unit.

Margallo vindicates his firm policies on Gibraltar
Margallo emphasised that "cordial relations" with the United Kingdom does not equal ceding the territorial integrity of Spain

On Wednesday, the caretaker government vindicated the firmness that has characterised its policies on Gibraltar, which has not strained cordial relations with the UK, a close partner with shared values and common interests.

Foreign and Interior Ministers, José Manuel García-Margallo and Jorge Fernández Díaz, respectively, presided over a ceremony at the Palacio de Viana in which they awarded officials of the State Security Forces in recognition of services rendered in matters relating to Gibraltar.

Fernández Díaz praised the direction taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation on policies on Gibraltar during the term of García-Margallo, who he defined as a "patriot". "The question of Gibraltar, until today, is in very good hands, those of a patriot with a clear vision for Spain", he stressed.

The head of Spanish diplomacy explained that the question of Gibraltar is a "permanent interest" of Spain's foreign policy, but was keen to stress that firmness on this position is not incompatible with maintaining "extremely cordial" relations with the United Kingdom, as has been the case in his term.

"But warmth does not equal the cession, especially that which relates to an issue that affects the unity of Spain and our territorial integrity, an issue that has been one of the priorities of this Ministry" explained García-Margallo.

The minister recalled how when he arrived at the Ministry in 2012, he found that Gibraltar "had broken over and over again the rules of the game, abusing concessions obtained in the past", such as the Tripartite Forum for dialogue between Madrid, London and Gibraltar, created under the socialist government of Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

"This forum, created with the best of intentions, and I have no doubt about that, it failed to achieve any sentimental closeness from the population of Gibraltar, nor a single advancement in political matters", according to García-Margallgo, who, citing Albert Camus, has warned that "good intentions can be as damaging as bad."

The only thing this forum has achieved - insisted the minister - was to consolidate an economic model based on opacity and low taxation to the detriment of the areas surrounding the Rock.

Hence, the government of Mariano Rajoy has acted in two directions with regards to Gibraltar: continuing to pursue the return to bilateral negotiations between Spain and the United Kingdom in relation to the dispute over sovereignty - a dialogue frozen since 2002 - while at the same time proposing, without success, to construct a new forum to address issues of local cooperation between Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar, where there would be representation for regional and local authorities from both sides of The Fence.

With respect to the six decorated officials, the minister has given value to their work to "ensure strict compliance with the law while displaying a vocation and sense of duty to a major issue for the homeland"

Spain breaks up 'IS jihadist cell'
Spanish police have arrested seven people with suspected links to so-called Islamic State (IS) and other jihadist groups, officials say.
The suspects were held in raids in the cities of Valencia and Alicante and in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta.
They provided logistical support for terrorist activities in Iraq and Syria, police say.
They say the alleged leader of the cell was also asked by IS to supply women for militants in the two countries.

Spanish auxiliary ship integrates into Canadian Navy
The Spanish Navy auxiliary oiler and replenishment (AOR) ship Patiño (A-14) set sail from Ferrol, Spain towards Halifax, Canada for a two-month deployment with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN).

In Halifax the Patiño will integrate into a US Navy and RCN task group to participate in the international manoeuvers TGEX-2016 in the east coast of North America. Throughout the deployment a 35-strong contingent of Canadian servicemen on board the AOR will receive training during the exercises at sea.

This deployment is the Spanish Navy response to an RCN request given its present lack of replenishment at sea (RAS) capability.

Navantia a step closer to fixing Spanish submarine’s weight problem
Spanish shipbuilder Navantia on April 6 informed that it has completed extending the pressure hull on the first Spanish Navy S80 submarine, a move that should prevent the submarines from sinking to the ocean floor.

Back in 2013, media reported that the Spanish Navy’s fleet of S80 submarines was faced with serious delays as it turned out the submarines were 70 tones too heavy to be able to float at all.

Spain ‘betraying Nato allies’ by hosting Russian navy
Spain has been accused of betraying its Nato and EU allies by allowing dozens of Russian destroyers and submarines to refuel in its territories in north Africa — less than 20 miles from the Royal Navy base at Gibraltar.

Spain has hosted at least 57 Russian warships, submarines and amphibious vessels at its north African enclave since 2011, prompting concerns on both sides of the Atlantic that Madrid is providing succour to President Putin.

This week the US Congress highlighted the issue by amending the annual defence bill to require defence officials to report on Nato countries that allow Russian warships to dock at their ports.

The move comes after the Russian frigate Ladny docked at Ceuta this month, just two days after Royal Navy warships escorted another Russian frigate, the Admiral Grigorovich, through UK waters.

Defence analysts say that the frequency of Russian naval visits has turned the Spanish enclave into the main base of the Russian fleet in the western Mediterranean, prompting accusations it is undermining Nato solidarity in the face of Russian aggression in Crimea.
