Airbus Helicopters delivers the first Swedish NH90 for Anti-Submarine Warfare

Today, Airbus Helicopters delivered the first Swedish NH90 in full anti-submarine warfare (ASW) configuration to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration FMV (Försvarets Materielverk). The fully-qualified rotorcraft has an entirely customized mission system including underwater sonar, tactical radar and high cabin for improved interior space.

Are there Swedish armed forces outside Sweden?

The two last I know of were
- the bde of volunteers they sent to the Finnish Winter War (they took over the front in the Kemijarvi sector)
- the mini airforce Graf von Rosen put together for Biafra (they wrought havoc the Migs of the Feds - to be fair, flying in at three top level and catching them on the ground)
-- he followed in the foot steps of his father, who did the same for Finland in 1917/1918

They deployed as the main part of UN forces during the Congo crisis of the early 60's. IIRC it also marked the first large scale deployment of the Irish army.

The first part of that

The military has resorted to calling back former conscripts and reserve soldiers to fill gaps in various units, including participation in military exercises." is for the Home Guard.

I wonder what legal framework they have for calling reservists in peace time, when conscription has been abolished? May be they pay them so well that folks from the earlier age cohorts sign up... possibly the same ones that are in the Home Guard, which exc. for officers (some are regular) and experts does not need that many days a year from them.

After more than 20 years of strategic irrelevance, and thanks to increasingly unpredictable Russian behaviour, Gotland is back in the spotlight.
It is the latest chapter in the island's long military history, and one returning soldier is thrilled.
"It's almost a dream come true," says Lt Col Stefan Pettersson.
After a decade in civilian life, Pettersson is back in uniform, preparing to take command of the Swedish island's defences.
As he scans the snowy landscape where he and his colleagues used to train, he is still pinching himself.
"I always had a dream to come back as an officer and to do it here on Gotland and establish a new unit, it's perfect," he tells me.
The new Gotland battlegroup, expected to take shape by the end of next year, will number 300 full and part-time soldiers.

Another thing emerging from the airshow. Taking such a financial risk (before the order is signed) would point to Saab getting the C/D work out of the way, before retooling the line for E/F?

It wasn't such a good idea by Russia to simulate a bomber attack against Stockholm. Sweden is buying 18 units of either SAMP-T or Patriot in a hurry, speculating that a third could be sent to Gotland without leaving the capital defenceless (don't know how good a job google translate can do on this piece in Swedish):

Sweden has been following the same kind of defence industrial policy as the UK: keep doing high-end products, even if the quantities procured for the country's defence forces amount to mere templates (next-gen fighters, subs, stealth corvettes, mobile artillery... the last purchases in quantity were for Force90 as we know from CV, CB...).

Ramping up from such a base (as long as exports have kept also the production capacity ticking over) is doable:

- the same does not apply to manpower. Going down from 15 combat brigades to none leaves the army in a worse situation from the two other services

Defence and security company Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) to modify and upgrade two Swedish Navy Koster-class mine countermeasures vessels (MCMVs). The order covers the period 2016-2017 and the order value amounts to SEK147 million. Work on the vessels will be undertaken in Karlskrona.

Sweden is in the market for 3 Patriot batteries (one for Gotland, two to cover the capital and the AF Command Centre). And Belgium also has them in their 10-yr plan

Looks like Russian EW is at a good standard as the A2A missile missed, too.

If you have to have a layered defence, ie possibly a shorter ranged system to cover not only the Patriots but what they are defending (against other types of threats), then the price tag (considerable to begin with) just adds on

And talking about Saab, they are supplying shore-based anti-ship missiles to the Gvmnt that scrapped them in 2000, the only mitigating factor being that the missiles themselves can be taken from Navy stocks. All supporting systems have to be built again.
