What happened to the Ekranoplan, the huge ground effect vehicle the Soviets developed in the cold from the 1960's to the 1980's?
This was a part plane, part boat that could fly just above the above the sea surface and carry huge loads of personnel or weapons at high speed.
We look at its development, its inventor and its ultimate demise.

Bombardier C Series rebranded as the Airbus A220 family

(Airbus) 11th July 2018
Airbus’ global reach and scale come together with Bombardier’s state-of-the-art jet aircraft in the A220 Family (formerly the C Series), now being produced in a partnership between Airbus and Bombardier.
After Airbus bought a 50.01% stake in Bombardier, they have now not only earned the right to rename them the A220-100 (Bombardier CS100) and A220-300 (Bombadier CS300), but Airbus will also be the ones manufacturing this aircraft.

(Airbus) 10th July 2018
The A220 Family is the newest addition to the Airbus product line-up; The aircraft are fully optimized for the 100 to 150 seat market and perfectly complement Airbus’ existing best-selling A320neo family.

(Wonkabar007) 15th July 2018
For a the size of aircraft this jet really stops quick, as the A-220 lands after completing it’s practise display, for the Farnborough International Airshow.

Contrails are commonplace in the developed world and have been around for the last 50 plus years, about the same time as we have had rockets launching into space.

However, as we have discovered during that time the dangers of burning diesel fuel on the ground in cars and trucks we are now finding the same things in the jet and rockets exhaust but just how dangerous are contrails and rocket plumes?

Gatwick plans to operate both its runways
Image

Gatwick Airport (LGW) has announced plans to bring its existing secondary/emergency runway into regular use.
https://news.sky.com/story/gatwick-sets ... y-11528571

A good idea. Smaller sized aircraft with shorter wingpans could use the northern runway, leaving the main southern runway for larger aircraft with broader wings. Normally, both runways can't be used together by larger aircraft, as their wingtips might conflict. Currently, the northern runway is only used when the main southern runway is out of action.

First ion drive aeroplane flies

(Nature Video) 21 Nov 2018
Researchers from MIT have flown a plane without moving parts for the first time. It is powered by an ‘ion drive’ which uses high powered electrodes to ionise and accelerate air particles, creating an ‘ionic wind’. This wind drove a 5m wide craft across a sports hall. Unlike the ion drives which have powered space craft for decades, this new drive uses air as the accelerant. The researchers say it could power silent drones.

The UK's Air Accident Investigation Branch has revealed the cause of the Leicester City Football Club helicopter crash.
https://www.gov.uk/aaib-reports/aaib-sp ... 169-g-vskp

Basically, a pin in the tail rotor control mechanism of the Agusta AW169 (G-VSKP) became disconnected which resulted in a loss of control for the pilot resulting in the crash.

Failure to get any American orders was always going to kill the program, shame as those that have flown on it (I haven't), have really liked it.
