What was the last movie you watched?

Post by The Armchair Soldier »

A popular thread on many other forums, simply rate the last movie you watched.

If it's a new movie, please be considerate and don't mention spoilers.

---------------------------

The last movie I watched was Jurassic World and I rate it 8.5/10.

Firstly, the bad things:

The script is quite weak. There's very little character development and some of the characters (the two kids, in particular) just feel wholly-unnecessary. The characters, on the whole, aren't anywhere near as memorable or interesting as those in the first Jurassic Park, besides, perhaps, Owen, the raptor-keeper-guy.

Another major bad point for me was the over-chirpiness of some of the characters during, what should be, completely serious scenes. There was one such scene where the dinosaurs were on the loose and tearing people up and one of the kids turned around and said "I can't wait to tell mum!". It just killed the whole scene.

Now, the many good things.

The dinosaurs are amazing. There's a good mix of herbivores and carnivores. The Indominus Rex (the new "hybrid" dinosaur the film introduces) is probably the most terrifying dinosaur ever featured in a Jurassic Park film. It's just an absolute killing machine. Of course, the raptors are as lethal as they've ever been, and thankfully, not as "tamed" or pacified as the trailers made out.

The CGI is brilliant, and that's coming from someone who criticised it in the trailers. There were only a few moments where I thought it looked a bit ropey, but other than that, I thought it held strong throughout. In saying that, there's nothing in Jurassic World that looks as lifelike as the animatronics used in the previous films. It's a shame they decided to almost-completely do away with animatronics in favour of CGI.

Jurassic World has some of the most intense scenes of the whole franchise. The ending is just out of this world, especially for a Jurassic Park super fan like me.

The best thing about Jurassic World, though, is the constant throwbacks to the original Jurassic Park. As a huge fan of the franchise, some of them almost brought me to tears. There's no doubt Jurassic World was made for the fans, by the fans.

So, all in all, it was a brilliant movie and definitely the most worthy sequel to Jurassic Park.

I've heard a few complaints about JW (mostly that it's sexist and that they go unnessasarily long with a death scene). Never really got into the JP movies, but I might give this a go when it hits Sky.

Saw 'Lucy' the other week... Complete waste of time and effort. Confusing, stupid and just.... Bad.

I went to see Deadpool on Wednesday. I was sort of dragged to it reluctantly as I've never really been a fan of superhero movies, but I left the cinema very impressed.

Deadpool (the character) is just hilarious. He got the audience laughing throughout the whole movie.
There wasn't a single moment where I thought the movie dragged. I was gripped all the way through.
The action sequences were amazing and the fight scenes were well choreographed. Some excellent gore thrown in, too.

My only "complaint" was that it seemed a bit excessive on the nudity and bad language. I was expecting more of a kids movie with it being based on a comic book character, but it was anything but. There were some borderline pornographic sex scenes, lots of boobs and adult references throughout.

Still though, I very much enjoyed the movie and I would definitely recommend it. I plan on seeing the sequel when it's released (one is already confirmed to be in the works).

I give it an 8/10!

I'm hopefully seeing Deadpool later (as long as the bloody parcel I'm waiting for arrives in time that is)... Knew it was definitely not for kids (I think Ryan Reynolds had spoken about it a few times)...

Saw 'The Martian' last night. Very good movie. Slow in places but never too slow (if that makes sense). Cast are all superb and the visuals... Stunning. Can kinda see why it got that comedy award as well.

9/10.

"The Big Combo" - classic film noir from 1955. Plot is a real peasouper and it features a frighteningly young Lee Van Cleef.

Unrelated note: Pushing through the polar ice is back on the agenda, and will be practised again by the SSNs

Well, what did you think of it?
I know! Perhaps because the sub world is lurky and murky for a mainlander and I didn't pay much attention to the sea. That said, I did tour the USS Philadelphia (SSN-690) back in '98 while she was moored in VA. Back then just walked up to the crew, presented military ID and asked for a tour. They obliged and I got a neat tour of the vessel and an appreciation for the job.

As far as the movie, I think the storyline is classic Cold War "get there before the Russians". The British agent was the most colorful. This part entertaining:

Some of the effects needed working on though. Maybe stays in the "B-Movie" class because of it....

Captain America: Civil War. Enjoyable hokum, much better that the recent Avengers movie. Watch it and pick a side.

Also re-watched Spectre on DVD - fitting end for Daniel Craig, but time for a new, smoother Bond.

Finally caught most of "The French Connection", 1971 Gene Hackman.

Rich audio capturing street sounds without overdoing music theme overlay (like many modern action/drama types).

Big cars back then.

1911 play on the metro from the French assassin who clearly did not zero his rifle....

"Independence Day Resurgence" (or "How To Ruin A Good Film With An Unnecessary Sequel"!)

If you loved the original, you will hate the new one. If you have not seen the original one, you will still hate the new one. Its awful. Predictable, cheesy, too many "we did this in the first film so we will do it again in this one" moments. No Will Smith this time either.

It also has the feel of a dumb simple film made for a 'popcorn' audience, specifically a Chinese one, as that's where most profits from this type of film are these days.

Avoid!!! ;)

Three war movies, I detest.

Anzio
Battle of the Bulge
and the fekking bridge at fekking Remagen.

They're still better than Pearl Harbor, though.

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Storyless, devoid of wit and charm, pointless meaningless explosions every few minutes for thrills type rubbish.
Completely boring and the end couldn't come quick enough. Completely dreadful. Please avoid.

Score: 1*/10*

1* for having a Leonard Nimoy tribute nod.

Deadpool - not as funny as it thinks it is. As for Star Trek, well it's directed by the man responsible for the Fast and Furious franchise; so no surprises there then.
