As part of Littoral Response Group (Experimentation) (LRG(X)), personnel used the waters, shores and exercise areas of the island to see how drones, autonomous equipment, new technology and kit can transform the way Royal Marines operate.

Re: Royal Marines
At around the same time the new "autonomous advance force company" size was also announced:29 Jun 2020, 16:15
Text lifted from The Telegraph:
"It is envisaged one LRG will be permanently east of Suez, with the Royal Navy facility in Bahrain acting as a staging post.
The second Group will focus on Nato’s northern flank, working closely with Norwegian amphibious forces, and the Mediterranean.
The three Bay-Class Landing Ship Dock Auxiliary ships, crewed by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, will be the likely hosts, initially at least, with additional medical and aviation facilities developed in the near future."
"More than 150 Royal Marines and Army Commandos will form the new Vanguard Strike Company this autumn, and will have access to "game-changing technology and weaponry", the Royal Navy said."
and as the indications have been that about 200 would need to be accommodated for extended periods, this leaves c. 50 for
- medical facilities
- ship-to-shore connectors (helo crew, boat handlers)
Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.

Re: Royal Marines
Delighted the 150 strong vanguard company are going to get some fancy trousers and a new rifle, but i really want to know about the other part of the 3Cdo establishment.
The other ~6000 people that make up 3Cdo. The Commandos. The Engineers. The Loggies. The Fires. The Boaty People. The Drivey People. Oh, and the LPD's, LSD's. LPH (role), etc.
From what is described thus far 3Cdo could quite happily shrink to 2.5 (adminstrative) commandos, with most of the enabling formations stripped away. Let's say and total establishment of half what it is now. ~3000.
When do we find out what FCF means? It can't stay a secret forever; any ConOps so fragile it cannot be revealed really isn't worth pursueing...

Re: Royal Marines
I read the news/ announcement quite differently:jedibeeftrix wrote: happily shrink to [x, y z], with most of the enabling formations stripped away.
- the 150 has Army enablers mixed in
- though all three Bays have been 'gesticulated' as the mobile bases, it has not been based on a any announcement... but so far is, rather, a press story
- it is not likely that the MCM mothership role, for one of the three Bays, will be 'abolished' when we take into account all that is going on in the 'wider Gulf region'
- however, the EoS element would use Bahrain as a staging post, so...
If any of the three Bays would need to go into dock, the third one there could - temporarily - step into role
The moral of the story is that for this to work (rotation. lengthy stays onboard), we would need about 3 or 4 'Vanguard Coys' ... I think the naming is a reference to prototyping which elements would be most needed, as accommodation - even after any modifications - would be the limiting factor
3 or 4 companies... a Cdo
- one Med
- one elsewhere, West of the Med
- two rotating through the ship EoS
Now I'll put that in the hat, add some Maritime Security (e.g Atalanta), the two Cdos that retain the heavy weapons (ie. can be used as manouevre bns) and the folks that guard anything nuclear around these islands
... and what do I get
I don't know; let's wait for the answer

Re: Royal Marines
Rumour suggest a reduction in RM of 400 (and 300 likewise from RAF Regt).
Indications are that this is 400 from 3Cdo in toto, and not 400 from the three and a half Commandos themselves.
~6,600 > ~6,100 rather than ~2,200 > ~1,600 (which might indicate an even larger cut in the brigade)

I hate journalistic puff pieces like this.SKB wrote:
They always invariably don't stand up to close scrutiny and will be resented by the allies in question because the details of this exercise will almost have certainly been leaked by someone in the RM, who is present at the exercise.

Royal Marines were at the tip of the spear during the largest military exercise in the Southern Hemisphere.
The UK’s Commando Force are ramping up their presence in the Indo-Pacific and, after a mission to South Korea earlier this year, were deployed to Australia – embarking on helicopter carrier HMAS Adelaide – as 13 nations demonstrated their combined military might.

As said this is a good first step the Puma is OK but a Camcopter with I master radar would be better for gathering pattern of lifeJackstar wrote: ↑15 Aug 2023, 10:00 “HMS Trent sailed from Gibraltar with an expert boarding team of Royal Marines and a Puma surveillance drone, tasked with increasing stability across the Gulf of Guinea through training, in order to protect around £6 billion of UK trade that passes through the region.”

(Forces News) 8th September 2023
British special operations soldiers and Royal Marines will soon be more lethal on the battlefield thanks to a £90m contract to deliver a new modern, high-precision rifle.
The Knight's Stoner 1 (KS-1), designated L403A1, boasts a muzzle signature reduction system, an improved optical sighting system and crucially can be more easily shot from the left shoulder than the current L85 assault rifle.
Royal Marines tested the rifle on exercise in Norway earlier this year.
