It's a what if thread,
We all know that the RN had designs for a mini Forrestal class carrier with CVA01 and was dropped as cost saving measure, but has the RN ever considered the French Clemenceau saving money with an existing design, and going American for an air group of A4 Skyhawks with S2 Trackers and later on the Westland Sea King
And how would the population reacted to such a propastion.
French aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy!
Re: French aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy!
Do you mean buy the (now) São Paulo from Brazil (since the Clemenceau has been scrapped)? Or commission DCNS to build a new ship of the class? Or buy the designs from DCNS and build one ourselves?

No no back in the 60's as an alternative to the CVA01 which was cancelled.Tiny Toy wrote:Do you mean buy the (now) São Paulo from Brazil (since the Clemenceau has been scrapped)? Or commission DCNS to build a new ship of the class? Or buy the designs from DCNS and build one ourselves?
Most probably would not have mattered any way as you already put money towards the design of CVA01, more interested how the populace would have reacted to the idea of a non British designed carrier.

The Clems looked as if there was a serious amount of American influence- compare with the angled deck Essex class, with the angle set further back than British carriers and the extensively glazed bridge.

I think that would have been a non starter, more likely would have been modified Essex which were offered to the RN, and an RN inspection team did visit the USA to investigate 2 Essex class that were offered to them, but nothing came of it.
