Meanwhile, it is confirmed that 1 PARA / UKSFSG lost G Company last year. Whatever that "special forces boost" is, it does not show much in there.

Or they aren't the SAS at all.
They could actually be from Jordan.

SAS use prototype Punisher Weapon System Against ISIS in Libya
I was holding off on reposting this given it concerns "What they have" but it's gone all over the media by this point.
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/sas-use-protot ... ya-1574767
It looks like the UKSF have gotten their hands on the XM25 somehow, at least according to reports, they seem pretty specific. Always of course a bit of wariness (We've had reports of them with fancy Israeli sniper rifles and testing V-22's and jet-ski quads after all) but I could certainly believe it happening. A fantastic weapon system if so.
Also, check out the page, there's some rare footage of an Italian Palmaria SPG firing in direct fire mode in Libya within the first video. Not a commonly seen vehicle, based on the OF-40 tank that saw little export success, and I believe one of its first true combat captures, decades after it ceased to really be a "thing" on the market.

Were the BBC even in the right to publish this? Pretty desperate journalism to my eyes. They know how Whitehall feels about this sort of thing, so why proceed with it?

Quite right. SF fanboys will be fapping till they ejaculate dust right now.

Re: United Kingdom Special Forces (UKSF)
Careful there... so that folks don't get ideas like: we coud get by only
1. having the deterrence (Submarine service 1600 strong in all?)
2. SF (to project influence, and intervene in support of evacuations of nationals;numbers not disclosed)
3. 43 Commando Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines (550-strong, for the protection of deterrence, nuclear facilities and providing the experts for non-compliant boardings)
4. having a UKCG (will have plenty of brands new OPVs). and
5. the QRA we could outsource to USAFE (an annual fee plus avgas paid against receipted expenses)
Non-armed policing is already backed up other kinds
http://www.eliteukforces.info/images/po ... ctical.jpg
but having the TA manpower available to help in civil emergencies might be a short-lived luxury in this kind of future scenario.

Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.

Re: United Kingdom Special Forces (UKSF)
But they already do:
"Special Reconnaissance Regiment - Selection And Training
Following a grueling selection process, SRR operatives are trained in the arts of surveillance, photography, close quarters battle (CQB) and advanced driving. (see 14 Company section for more details of such training). With the shift of emphasis to operations in the Middle-East, SRR operatives are likely to become proficient in Mid-Eastern languages such as Arabic and Farsi.
The SRR recruits from all 3 UK arms of the military. It is the only UKSF regiment to include women in operational roles"

Re: United Kingdom Special Forces (UKSF)
Oops, you are right (I had taken the merger of SAS and SBS literally, and equated them , ie. SAS as a headline, to UKSF):
"22 SAS and the SBS are sometimes termed 'Tier 1' special forces, due to fact they are the units usually tasked with direct action. The SRR, SFSG, 18 (UKSF) signals etc are 'Tier 2', as they fulfill a supporting role for the 2 Tier 1 units."

SAS doubles terrorism unit to combat multiple attacks
Read More: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/d8dd ... a2dd1bdb9f (subscription required)The SAS is doubling the size of its anti-terrorist force to cope with a big attack.
The unit will increase in size to 80 troops, according to a source close to the elite regiment.
The aim is to ensure security services have the manpower and skill to tackle co-ordinated attacks by gunmen and suicide bombers like those that left 130 dead in Paris in 2015.
Police in London have an elite force of about 130 anti-terrorism officers trained by the SAS to fire weapons in “close quarters combat” and to drop from helicopters by rope.

Re: United Kingdom Special Forces (UKSF)
There's never much mention of the other UKSF support units which are excellent. The Medical Support Units (Army and RN only) which serve in each of the formations, the Medical Support Wing which gives role 2 medical support to UKSF and is drawn from the Army and RAF. These medics are cutting edge, they complete a rigorous but basic selection called Black Serpent testing both physical and trade skills (it is not an alternative to UKSF selection). The US Forces medics are among the best anywhere and both the MSU and MSW, work closely with them.
Fleet Diving Unit 1 carries out specialist diving support to maritime counter terrorist operations
And lastly the Royal Logistic Corps have a squadron co located with 16 Air Assault Brigade trained to give direct logistic support to UKSF.

SAS: Women allowed to join for first time

Gavin Williamson announced that all combat roles were now open to women, including serving in special forces units such as the SAS.
He said for the first time the "armed forces will be determined by ability alone and not gender".
