That would have made the case for the size the CVA-01 needed to be to be effective much easier, the Admiralty could go to the Treasury and say we need two new UK versions of these carriers please and have firm data on sortie rates and size of air group etc. I wonder how big the RN would be now if we had retained fleets carriers and their escort groups as the core to the Royal Navy?

It was a Labour government, nothing could be said to save the carriers. To the left, carriers are symbols of imperialism. Only when Blairites took over the party and steered it to the right, did they become acceptable.
