Defence spending will be @400bn over the next 10 years - as always it’s about priorities. The running cost is approx 2 x T23s. Or, perhaps let’s start by stopping talking about new LPD/LSD ships, which would be well in excess of the this, and use what we have till the mid 2030s when hopefully the world will be different.SW1 wrote:And if you don’t have 40m or .5billion over 10 years?

Yep we won’t be talking about new, so decommissioned without replacement as there’s higher priorities . The running costs maybe different maybe off but this is what it was before at a pt in time.Repulse wrote:Defence spending will be @400bn over the next 10 years - as always it’s about priorities. Then you are not receiving enough money from HMG to provide adequate defence of your country!

Top effort by Argus and HNLMS Groningen a nice little 2000 kg drug bust
Re: RFA Argus (Casualty Receiving Ship / Aviation Training Ship) (RFA)
RFA Argus demonstrating once again the capability it brings - having an Aviation Support Ship as part of the fleet is not the luxury some think it is - it is essential.

The ability to distribute aviation assets rather than concentrate all in one place who would of thought that would be a thing.

Hence the next opportunity to have bigger hangars than were put on the Tides must not be allowed to pass
- with the size projected for FSS(s) the marginal cost should be 'manageable'

Re: RFA Argus (Casualty Receiving Ship / Aviation Training Ship) (RFA)
I can possibly see the case for large hangars on the future FSS, for supporting non CSG operations, though I cannot see it as a priority for its priority role. Sailing close to a CVF, a Tide hangar is sufficient.
I could see sense if two FSSs were built with limited aviation facilities (batch 1), and then a larger batch of two vessels were built that had aviation facilities for 2 Chinooks or 4 Merlins. Perhaps one of the latter two could be part funded by the aid budget.

So the RN should get more carriers. Good for you!SW1 wrote:The ability to distribute aviation assets rather than concentrate all in one place who would of thought that would be a thing.

Yes, and there were limiting factors in the design, like the twin funnels.Repulse wrote:Sailing close to a CVF, a Tide hangar is sufficient
But talking about a bigger hull (FSS), there is duality of function:
- VERTREP (to ships or to ashore)
- and the ferry function, e.g. if Apaches migrate to a shore base, then the carrier can receive more lift capacity
This means that the number of 'spots' is not critical; more like you could have a hangar for 1-2 and under the helodeck another one for 1-3, from which a lift would operate
... just a matter of where space can be made available w/o sacrifice of the main function (to access stores as required and then to 'hoist' them overboard )

If I read the deck markings correctly, the helicopter spot is in a 'fun spot' v close to the edge, probably because of the superstructures not being 'movable' when the conversion was done (as well as the lift's location?)

Argus looking good! Especially for a ship supposedly retiring in three years time:

RFA Argus will leave Portsmouth's Victory Jetty at 15:15 on Friday 3rd September.

Re: RFA Argus (Casualty Receiving Ship / Aviation Training Ship) (RFA)
What’s the chances for an extension of Argus for another 5-10 years? Too flexible a capability not to be replaced or gapped.

Re: RFA Argus (Casualty Receiving Ship / Aviation Training Ship) (RFA)
Does anyone have the info to hand on the cost of the various upgrades Argus has been through? I was thinking if a similar conversion could be done to a Ro-Ro vessel combining the capabilities of Argus with the Points though probably not the same capacity as the latter. Such a vessel would be of great use to the LSGs and the RN in general.
