Good news for Italian ship builders, but yet more evidence of the utter hilarity that is Gulf State procurement. A BMD capable LPD?

Nothing more than a vanity project, kit bashed to all hell and lacking realistic direction - in other words, business as usual in the Gulf. I'm starting to think they only have two requirements when it comes to new purchases:

1. Is it glitzy/new/do the big boys have these sorts of toys?
2. Can i show off with it/will it help with my insecurities?

The Italian Air Force and Navy are due to take delivery of the first of four ATR 72 maritime patrol aircraft from Leonardo-Finmeccanica to replace ageing Atlantique aircraft, which they fly out of Sicily’s Sigonella air base.

The delivery, which is reportedly due in the next few weeks, marks the culmination of an eight-year wait since Italy opted to spend €360 million (US $397 million) on the aircraft in 2008.

I was thinking thet the Italians were interested for Poseidon?

So, what's the range fr this ATR72 MPA? Article mentions 12 hrs endurance, so 12 x 500 kph of cruising speed, 6000 km? :o

What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?

About PPA project, I don't see the difference between PPA Light and PPA Light Plus versions?

Another thing, about Durand de la Penne-class frigates, is their complement of 380 any lower now without Standard missiles? Any other changes?

Yes, I am.
Though I don't really post. After the British forces I find the Italian the most interesting and like quite a lot of what I see.. Just hope it gets funded (same problem Britain has!)
PPA with full size torpedo tubes could give a hostile ssk a very nasty surprise, and maybe the trieste class lhd? Could be a basis for next gen commando/helo carrier for the R.N.?

I agree, most of the time they seem to get a helluva lot bang for a buck on their procurement (we do also at times see inflated unit costs, like for the Freccias, where the name of the game is to keep the industry alive and the manufacturing is done at an insanely slow pace, just to make it las... to the next order).
Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.
If everyone is thinking the same, then someone is not thinking (attributed to Patton)

A good ship, too bad it's not built for combat, but purely for prestige and support of national production...

Meh, it's all for nothing, single British Type 26 not even built yet is worth more than 5-6 Italian built/commissioned FREMMs...

NEWBIE here, aren't you? Don't you know that only RN ships ( maybe even the USN too, but not entirely sure ) are built for combat, all other countries ( France, Italy, Germany etc. ) are building warships not for war, but just for prestige and support of national industry... :o
