Welcome to the forum, eagle spotters. Thank you for sharing news on the Italian Armed Forces.

What will be the future composition of the Italian Navy? What will be its major fleet units by 2025? I've lost track of all the new ships that have been posted in this thread. :P

Thank you for posting such an insightful list. The Italian Navy is shaping up to become a very capable navy indeed.

I find it strange that our recent defence review upgraded Germany to a "Tier 1" security partner (alongside France and the U.S.) but completely left out Italy. From what I've read, Italy is as just capable as Germany in a military sense (perhaps, more so) and it seems to be a lot more active in tackling global security issues. I'm hopeful that we'll reevaluate in a future defence review.

Italy has, no doubt a v sensible defence policy, and they are building their capabilities accordingly.

Let's take the UK view, and segments:
- straight line to the East, and to the N of it =Germany
- not to mention that they are the senior partner in the successful missiles co-operation/ industry consolidation (cfr. copters?)

South of that line:
- ohh. Africa is there (but no direct threats) =France

The other sectors:
- 180 degrees = Canada & the US

So,, beyond this sectoral view, we come to
- the ME: who is there & where would we (even) want to be?
- South/ South East Asia... it's all in place. It is just about "carrying the burden".... oops! Some nations have critical dependencies on the region, but then again, you also have regional players in there. Some of them not stable, and some of them at odds with each other over (what seem to be ) minor issues

Last news: new Italian Navy LHD "Trieste" will be equipped with ski-jump !

So, ITS "Trieste" will be an LHA vessel, even VSTOL (F35B) carrier, to replace ITS Cavour, when not available.

Read about the plans a couple of years ago, and one of the class was always going to be an "aviation" ship, so I read that as training, in addition to being a back up
- the other thing the plans had was a class of three; still the case?

"Northrop Grumman is also providing the antenna which will receive data as well as transmit navigation instructions to the Global Hawks. The ground station will contain 22 operator stations as well as 11 trainee operator stations, a program source told Defense News."

In full operation, the station will be staffed by 400, of which a good number on a carefully crafted 2-yr rotation .
=> most NATO countries will have well trained analysts to use the outputs in the not so distant future

Last news/rumors talk about 1 LHA (Trieste) and 1 LHD (on similar hull but without carrier devices) to commissioning by 2021 (LHA) and 2025 (LHD) to replace Garibaldi, San Marco and San Giorgio.
LHA is contractualised and all financed.
LHD is only planned.

But LPD San Giusto will remaining in service at least until the year 2026/2028 for a subsequent substitution, witk another one LHD.

Thanks, the nice (and usual) 3-yr stretch at the end of the planning horizon
... let us see how things are then.

GE to Provide Gas Turbines for Italian Navy PPA Hybrid Drive
GE’s Marine Solutions will provide the LM2500+G4 gas turbine that will power the Italian Navy’s new Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura (PPA) multipurpose offshore patrol ships. The ships’ hybrid electric propulsion system also will use GE’s shock-proof MV3000 drives and a GE-designed electrical network of motors as part of the propulsion system.
