The Mk2 gun entered service in 1940 first seeing action in Norway with the Royal Artillery and France with the Royal Canadian Artillery. The gun served in all theatres and provided sterling service through the every campaign involving British and Commonwealth forces. It was also popular with the Germans and the Americans. It was used not only as a towed piece but also as a Self Propelled Gun.
As a very robust and simple gun to operate it is still in service across the world. It was retired from front line service in 1967 but continued as a training and ceremonial gun with the regular and territorial army until the 1990’s. It was used at the Battle of Mirbat by the SAS in 1973. But has been used in a variety of trials including in Northern Ireland firing simulating IRA Mortar Launchers.
Internationally the 25pdr has served in a number of Campaigns Malaya and Korea with the Commonwealth. In Africa with the Portuguese, Rhodesians and South African’s. With the Indian and Pakistani Artillery in South West Asia. In Europe it was used by many armies after the war the Irish army have only recently replaced them with the 105mm Light gun.

RE: Mirbat, this account might be a sanitised one

as there is another one where the 25Pdr didn't just happen to be sitting by, but the local troops manning it refused to fight and hence one man had to rush to it and operate it on his own (a rather big guy Sgt Labalaba was, too).

Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.

Re: Ordnance, QF, 25 Pdr
5? 25pdr battery is 8 guns (there are some servicible live firers in the UK in the hands of living history groups) and indian and pakistani armies have large numbers of them
Quads and no27 ammo trailer are a pain in the ASS. Irish army used 4 tonners to tow them you can carry the gun stores and ammo in the back along with the crew. a 1 tonner can do the same.

Re: Ordnance, QF, 25 Pdr
men & women from the British army were firing 25 pounder saluting guns to day as part of the RA 300 celebrations and continuing links between the Royal Regiment and the Maltese armed forces. Gunners from 105 (ulster and Scottish) regiment fired a salute in valetta.
