Blimps and airships

Post by Gabriele »

A number of blimps have been used for Base ISTAR in Afghanistan, and supposedly were (are?) due to stay in the long term as a joint Army - RAF Regiment force protection asset under Project OUTPOST (something i read quite a long while ago, hope it hasn't changed in the meanwhile).

And the hybrid airship hopefully will be tested soon. I'm not holding my breath, but i am fascinated by the promises. Very curious to see how it goes. I think a dedicate thread can't hurt, since on the MPA one we were clearly OT.

AviationWeek has a very detailed walk around of the AIRLANDER 10, to start with, which i think is very interesting: http://aviationweek.com/technology/hybr ... dium=email
You might also know me as Liger30, from that great forum than MP.net was.

could you fix a crows nest system to a blimp and tether it to a ship to provide continuous cheap AEW?

Remind me again how much Lockheed and the US wasted on HAV transporters?
