I can't speak for NATO but with US ops, unless there is some need for a catchy PR name, they simply are drawn off of lists of names maintained by the supported Geographic Commander, or what we used to call "CINCs"; e.g. EUCOM, CENTCOM, etc.

I've said this before on other sites but it bears repeating here. As an experienced surface ASW operator, the Gotland-class scares the living hell out of me . . . and apparently everyone else in the US Navy with a clue as well. Which is why we leased her and operated her out of San Diego for two years. She is a real game changer and I really hope we learned some things from that experience, or else the future of warfare at sea offers some pretty bleak horizons. :?

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has said.
[Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, he said] about 1,000 troops will now serve until 2021 to defend Europe against the threat posed chiefly by Russia.
That's a proportionate response, then, compared to the treat level that required a 50,000+ BAOR.

More seriously, what will be the make up, anyone know? Sounds like a bn plus some support, perhaps on a rotating basis.

Germany, Italy May Increase Submarine Fleets
The German and Italian Navies are looking to increase their submarine fleets again in light of evolving security challenges, senior officials said at the Subcon 2015 conference on submarine technology organised by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in Kiel.

Germany
[...]
While there is still no urgent need to add boats right away according to Capt Faltin, future operational capability is being considered well in advance, including the replacement of the current boats. This could start within the next 15 years and see a modest increase in the overall number of subs beyond the current level of six.

Italy
[...]
The submarine force also hopes to stem the reduction in number of boats, with consideration being given to extend the life of two Improved Sauro-class boats by up to 10 years (maintaining a six boat fleet until at least 2025), and a push to increase the fleet beyond the planned four boats long-term in the upcoming defence White Paper.

Where does it say in that article that Russia is actually going to run out of reserves in a year (no wonder trade wars are so popular, seemingly as a policy instrument, but actually meant to stimulate self sufficiency, before even more imports start to dry up).
- robust response is good, but playing a long game is also sensible

Now, something could happen that pushes up the oil & gas price... who knows

Carter advised that spending on US troops and facilities in Europe will quadruple. The budget details will come out within days, saying on what exactly the increased spend will be allocated.

NATO launches anti-submarine warfare exercise in Norwegian Sea
Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg marked the launch of NATO's anti-submarine warfare exercise "Dynamic Mongoose" in a visit to Trondheim, Norway on Monday (20 June 2016). The exercise, focused on detecting and defending against submarines, runs for ten days. Joined by Norwegian Defence Minister Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide, Mr. Stoltenberg addressed sailors aboard the Norwegian frigate HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen. Calling naval capabilities "as important as ever", he noted that 70% of the earth is covered by water, and that 90% of world trade travels by sea. He stressed that NATO must be able to operate "on the sea, over the sea, and also under the sea.”

Three thousand sailors and aircrew from eight Allies (Canada, France, Germany, Norway, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States) are participating in the exercise. Four submarines from Canada, Germany, Norway and the United States are taking part, along with nine surface ships and four maritime patrol aircraft. The exercise takes places in the Norwegian Sea, in an area measuring 14,000 square nautical miles.

During the exercise, submarines will have to transit from one point to another, while surface vessels try to track them down and simulate an attack. Surface units will also have to transit between two points while under submarine threat. This is the fourth time Exercise Dynamic Mongoose has been conducted; it previously took place in 2012, 2014 and 2015.
