Keep reading these headlines about the RN going to be the foremost naval power in Europe and still can't see it , sorry ,. maybe joint leading naval power with France ,but Italians coming up a close second and probably better when comes to more heavily armed escorts than RN in future ,I know I've said it before but as said it keeps being said in the headlines ,

It's got an utterly enormous sonar,and has to have long duration at sea in the worst weather with decent accomodation for the crew.
But mainly because its ballast tanks hold 8,000 tonnes of water for stability whilst surveying.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what plans he has to replace HMS Scott.
Jeremy Quin:
The out of service date for HMS Scott has not changed as a result of the Integrated
Review. Current plans will see SCOTT retired from service in 2022. As part of the
Government's investment in shipbuilding, which increases to over £1.7 billion a year
this Parliament, we will procure a Multi-role Ocean Surveillance Ship (MROS) to
replace HMS Scott.

Currently subject to some speculation on social media.

No moon pool? Would that not be the best way to deploy UUVs.

There is a 7.2m x 7.2m moonpool ( third item on front page of spec document).

ROV HANGAR
A double ROV hangar, housing two ROVs, is situated aft of the accommodation
area. The hangar may be closed in order to function as a protected work area for storage, maintenance and handling of the ROV systems. The vessel also holds a ROV mechanical and electrical workshop.

Might be a template for what the RN are looking for...due for delivery in 2025.

Disappointingly for the Italian's though there is no 76mm guns all over...they must be losing their touch..

Thats true.

It might be bonkers but I was actually thinking it would make a lot of sense for the RN to make them a little more 'fighty'. If it can carry a Merlin, and stream a decent towed array it would make a lot of sense for 1 of the MRSS to replace the Frigate permanently deployed on TAPS. Help free up a high end asset. You could use it as an ASW training vessel for subs from Faslane, trainee ASW operators (plenty of live targets to train with) both in the air and aboard ship. And any real MRSS in a war would be useful in actually hunting enemy UUV's looking to damage or cut undersea cables and other assets. Add in deploying/servicing the RN's hoped for large UUV's it could make sense....

That 'patrol boat' version of the gun went out of production a long time ago... has it made a comeback?

Would say a 12 cell CAMM VLS, 2 x 30mm and a Wildcat would be sufficient.

Edit: Basically an extended Echo with a hangar.

I believe so, I think it is a version of the current Rapid marketed as being able to act as a CWIS, I will do some digging on the subject, I am sure I have seen an article on a ship fitted with it.

I wouldn't necessarily go that far, just a Phalanx and the 30mm. Merlin would be needed however.

I would have a pair 40mm would be better one weapon type covering air and surface

Why is anything more than the defensive weapons on current survey vessels needed?

The Echo's have 2 x 20mm and time and threat have moved on . I would say two times 40mm maybe over the top however one would be a good fit as I feel basic level anti ship has now moved in to the hands of gray zone actors

Whatever is fitted, they need two, so that threats from either beam can be dealt with simultaneously.

Good because this is something there’s an actual need for:

All the more important after the recent attacks on Nordstrom Gas pipeline.

Possibly the single most important capability gap we have. And reverting back to the original plan for two as well?

It’s a good move. For a 100% available capability 2 vessels are essential. Would like one or both to have an ice breaking capability also, given the role will stretch from the Artic to the Azores.
