So, what should be cut?

For everything else UK defence-related that doesn't fit into any of the sections above.

Why's that?
At that sort of cost, there will be better ways of spending that amount of money and school kids that need stability.

That's fine, but it's nothing like on the scale we need to be thinking about, which is saving/cutting (in round numbers) something like £10-15B, probably more, over the next 10 years or so. We need to be thinking about which big-ticket items should go, not just saving a few millions here and there.

For example, can we really afford CASD? FAOD I'm not against a nuclear deterrent but increasingly I think it's questionable if it actually deters very much, yet it consumes a lot of resource and distorts much of RN strategy.

But if not CASD then what else of similar cost should be for the chop?

CASD was ok at the height of the cold war, but then a lot more was spent on defence. These days it takes too big a portion of the defence budget as it stands. Looking to the future we just cant afford it unless there is a big increase (unlikely) in the budget. There is nothing left to cut.

If Mr Cummings is targeting the actual procurement system rather that what is procured it may actually produce something worthwhile, hopefully.

The mindset of Cut! Cut! Cut! Is totally wrong, as is the mindset of 2%! 2%! 2%! What matters is:-
How much do we need to spend (and on what) to adequately defend ourselves (and by extension, those that we have commitments to).

Defence may start at home, but in the Global world we live in, what happens on the other side of the world is still important to our defence. If we do not project power around the world, we will leave a vacuum. Vacuum’s are filled by people (and countries) with ambition who are not constrained by consideration for other peoples or states, or the rule of law. In short that means dictatorships. There are two such (very large) blocs in the world at the moment, who are only going to grow in influence and in their demands if we, or more correctly our politicians allow them to.

Wether we know it or not, we are fighting for the preservation of all the freedoms that we hold dear. If the economy contracts then proportionally we MUST spend more on defence.

The above is based on the assumption that we are spending enough on defence! We are not spending anywhere near enough. We must not allow our politicians (or their advisers) to even have a fleeting thought that we are!
