Trump and Taiwan

"The US president-elect risked a diplomatic row with Beijing by holding a phone conversation with President Tsai Ing-wen - a major departure from decades of US policy in Asia. "

Might seem like a small thing, though it won't be taken as such in Beijing.

Of course the current situation is pretty ridiculous. Trump recognising Taiwan is just a self evident truth, but one very sensitive to the Chinese who have frankly been pandered to for decades.

No-one really thinks Taiwan could hold out should China decide to 'reunite' the country, hence the position taken, but maybe a more muscular foreign policy from the US could prevent the harassment that breaks out from time to time.

Or will this provoke it?

China seems to have laughed it off for the moment, whether they'd be willing to lose face in a broader normalisation of relations remains to be seen.
