We are equally accomodating for people who want both sides.
For those who want updates and comment, there's the news threads.
For those who want more prolonged and far reaching discussion, there's the general threads.
We know for certain that we have both types on this forum, hence the decision to give them their spaces.

The Times is reporting that HMS Daring has been diverted to the Bab el-Mandeb strait to "to protect a crucial shipping lane from the threat of Iranian-backed missile attacks".

It's fortunate that it's autumn/winter now there, so hopefully there will not be any problems with propulsion and power.
Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

Looking good!
Clearly shows the advantage of Sampson in that it can be mounted high.

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
Would there ever be a case fir mounting the Sampson system on the larger (taller) RFAs or RN amphibious ships. Even if it didn't carry the corresponding missile system. Or how's about an RN arsenal ship ??

Without the missiles and PAAMS no, but with them yes, as a dedicated goal keeper for the carriers it could make sense.
The Huntington Ingalls are proposing almost the same thing for the USN, only with Aegis on a modified San Antonio LPD.
I have a concept for the same thing on an Auxilary.

If you start doing that with Support ships its then time to disband the RFA and make all support a Royal Navy activity

Please don't confuse the that concept with an auxiliary, perhaps I should have been cleared with my words.
That concept would no longer be an RFA ship, or have any replenishment capabilities at all, it is a pure BMD goal keeper for the carriers, it just happens to use the same base platform in this instance.
The RFA would still exist as it does today, supporting, not protecting.

Trouble with Sampson, it's truly a world beating radar and can do stuff other radars cannot but it's very expensive and kinda heavy. Too much even for the CVFs although early designs had them included.
Best fitted to dedicated AA destroyers designed around them.

Reminds me of the defunct Sea Wolf VLS cells on the Fort-class.
Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
Wtf. Why go to the trouble of fitting the blooming ships with the silos then never filling them. Absolutely pointless

The Falklands war happened, and the Royal Navy learnt the hard way how important proper air defence systems are, so all the T23 we're fitted with their own, making those on the fort class redundant.

I would argue otherwise, Given sea wolf is a point defence system a high value target like a one stop AOR should be a candidate to have that level of air defence for self protection along side Phalanx. As well as being in the ADA that a Type 45 provides.shark bait wrote:The Falklands war happened, and the Royal Navy learnt the hard way how important proper air defence systems are, so all the T23 we're fitted with their own, making those on the fort class redundant.

Royal Navy protects shipping in Middle East
Read more: http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-la ... iddle-eastType 45 destroyer HMS Daring has protected merchant vessels and Royal Navy ships sailing through the Bab al-Mandeb strait.
The Portsmouth-based warship has provided reassurance in the region, being equipped to tackle possible air and surface threats with her combination of surveillance radars and Sea Viper missiles.
The advanced air destroyer also escorted the Navy’s Joint Expeditionary Force task group including Devonport-based HMS Bulwark, flagship HMS Ocean, and the MV Eddystone Point.
Around 95 per cent of Britain’s economic activity depends upon the sea and a vast amount of global trade passes through the region. HMS Daring is one of six destroyers, and continues the role her sister ship HMS Defender carried out earlier this year.
“An island nation needs a strong shipping industry and a strong shipping industry needs military support and protection,” said Jonathan Roberts, of the UK Chamber of Shipping.
“The Royal Navy is the best of the best. There is no safer pair of hands in the world and the work they do in protecting UK ships, and the goods and people they carry, is deeply appreciated and respected.”
Daring operates with the Royal Navy’s newest type of helicopter – the Wildcat Mk2 – which extends the ship’s capability beyond the horizon and uses its cutting-edge targeting system and surveillance radar to help reduce the threat of waterborne attack.
The ship will also be operating as part of Combined Task Force 150 and will use its Royal Navy and Royal Marines boarding teams to conduct counter piracy, counter terrorist and counter smuggling operations.

Concerning and embarrassing. Its the second time in a year a T45 has dropped out of a NATO exercise in home waters
