Re: Name our new polar research ship
Surely the RSS Edmund Hillary is the most obvious and fitting name.

If we want to leave the EU and forge a mighty path amongst the commonwealth countries we're going to have to give something and ship names costs nothing.arfah wrote:A kiwi?Pseudo wrote:Surely the RSS Edmund Hillary is the most obvious and fitting name.
"As part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition he reached the South Pole overland in 1958. He subsequently reached the North Pole, making him the first person to reach both poles and summit Everest."
Credit where credit's due. Still a non-Brit.
Re: Name our new polar research ship
RSS Attenborough or Shackleton for my personal choice. The competition is to name one ship. I thought they were building 3?

RRS John Briscoe

If the Navy did the same thing for the Trident replacement boats I'd Nominate:
HM Submarine Jeremy Corbyn
HM Submarine Cardinal Bruce Kent
HM Submarine Joan Ruddock
HM Submarine Michael Foot

Yep - whatever name is officially chosen, she seems likely to be affectionately known as "Boaty" for evermore.arfah wrote:British eccentricity still working well.
RRS Boaty McBoatface is leading with 27,000 votes.

Re: Name our new polar research ship
A fascinating mixture of the serious and silly, with the silly getting most votes.
I see that Boaty is still winning by miles, but of the other silly ones I like "It's Bloody Cold Here", also "What Iceberg?"
More seriously, perhaps they should follow the examples of pedigree horses and dogs and give the ship an "official" name, plus a nickname which everyone uses. Which would, of course, be "Boaty".

The correct name choice!
Boaty McBoatface lives on! HMG avoided an embarrassment by naming an AUV Boaty McBoatface, that will be operated from RRS Sir David Attenborough, a much better name.
Quite a neat and humorous solution.
