Hopefully it's been well planned as great as it would be to see the great nutjob dictator Erodgen out there needs to be a stable government ready to instantly drop into place.

Re: Possible Military Coup in Turkey
BBC just showed footage of a gunship opening fire on an unknown target, thought to be in the capital. Not good.
Re: Possible Military Coup in Turkey
From what I've heard the gunship was firing on the state broadcaster that had been taken over by the rebels. There's also rumours of F-16's attacking the Military Headquarters where the rebels are holding the Chief of the General Staff. It seems that the commander of the First Army has said that he's against the coup, so I'd imagine that there'll be troops loyal to him in Istanbul.

Re: Possible Military Coup in Turkey
There's been a ton of unconfirmed reports of military actions coming in at the moment. Latest are that tanks may have possibly opened fire in the parliament building and that a helicopter may have been shot down by an fighter jet.
The troops manning the blockade on the Bosphorus bridge also seem to have opened fire on a gathering crowd. One would presume they were attempting to disperse the group though it appears they caused casualties among them.

Re: Possible Military Coup in Turkey
Yeah. I'm getting lots of conflicting reports about what's happening. It's being reported that the (or a) helicopter attack was on a police station and the helicopter was later shot down by an F-16.
Re: Possible Military Coup in Turkey
Greek state TV is apparently reporting that Erdoğan's plane is approaching Istanbul airport. If that's the case then it's probably fair to say that the coup has failed.
Re: Possible Military Coup in Turkey
Coup was essentially crushed, they've taken a few hundred prisoners. Some rebels are apparently still determined to fight according to Reuters.
Some of them surrendered on Bosphorous Bridge, the civilians there are allegedly trying to throw them off the bridge.

If the coup has failed then this will cement Erodgans place as grand ruler and we will see his plans for New Turkey accelerate massively.

Yep. This might well be the effective end of secularism in Turkey. The defenestration of the military as the final guarantors of Ataturk's secular democracy can only lead in one direction.WhiteWhale wrote:If the coup has failed then this will cement Erodgans place as grand ruler and we will see his plans for New Turkey accelerate massively.
On the brighter side, it turns out that David Cameron was probably right. It looks like Turkey won't be joining the EU before the year 3000 after all.

Can someone/anyone explain what NATO's view on this might be?WhiteWhale wrote:Hopefully it's been well planned as great as it would be to see the great nutjob dictator Erodgen out there needs to be a stable government ready to instantly drop into place.

good question well presented deserves an answer. NATO will sit on sidelines and adapt to the circumstances

I think the whole view of that part of the world has been put behind a prism:
The Western media reports "the main nations breath more easily now that the coup has been thwarted" does not correspond well to half of Turkey's judiciary being thrown behind the bars... mind you, lots of them there already, and all of the investigating journalists (excepting those that have left the country)
- sounds a lot like Russia today (or what you say, galloglass?)

Reorganise the UN (properly) and let the armed forces of it's member states be put at it's disposal .....Get rid of states which refuse to meet international standards (no matter who they are) and do whatever is possible from there.

Well, not just internal policies but also Turkey's external actions have taken a drastic turn in the last 4+ years and it looks like EU's patience is starting to snap; here's a bridge from the Council's Oct. meeting to the forthcoming Dec. meeting:marktigger wrote:15,000 education staff suspended......Hmmmmmm this has been planned. 20.Provided constructive efforts to stop illegal activities vis-à-vis Greece and Cyprus are sustained, the European Council has agreed to launch a positive political EU-Turkey agenda with a specific emphasis on the modernisation of the Customs Union and trade facilitation, people to people contacts, High level dialogues, continued cooperation on migration issues, in line with the 2016 EU-Turkey Statement. The European Council invites its President, in cooperation with the President of the Commission and with the support of the High Representative, to develop a proposal for re-energising the EU-Turkey agenda to this effect.21.Recalling and reaffirming i.a. its previous conclusions on Turkey of October 2019, in case of renewed unilateral actions or provocations in breach of international law, the EU will use all the instruments and the options at its disposal, including in accordance with Article 29 TEU and Article 215 TFEU, in order to defend its interests and those of its Member States. The European Council will continue to closely monitor developments and will revert accordingly and take decisions as appropriate at the latest at its December meeting
With the underlined parts it very much looks like a "or else" text?
