Re: JAPAN / 日本
November 21st Japanese Mayo Aegis class destroyers Haguro and Maya launched their first SM-3 Block IIA to defeat medium and intermediate-range ballistic missiles, jointly funded and developed with the USN, test fired two missiles off Hawaii which saw a successful engagement of a T4-E an MRBM target missile (a three stage separating missile target with Kratos’ Oriole solid propellant rocket motor mounted atop two tandem USN surplus Mk-70 Terrier booster stages). The engagement involved the Cooperative Engagement Capability fitted on both ships, with the JS Maya detecting and tracking the missile target before the JS Haguro shot it down using the data from its sister ship.
Japan currently plans two new gen 20,000t Aegis destroyers, length 210 m, beam 20 m, crew 110 ?, using Lockheed's SPY-7 radar, not the Raytheon SPY-6 as fitted on the new USN 10,000t AB Aegis Flight IIIs.
PS North Korea November 18th launched what it claims is a new ICBM called the Hwasong 17 with purported ability to strike deep into the continental US.

Re: JAPAN / 日本
Japan has selected Patria AMV XP as its new wheeled APC.
https://www.mod.go.jp/atla/pinup/pinup041209.pdf

There are also other wheeled IFV program, which are considered to be of MHI design, based on Type-16 MCV. (see figure).
Not sure having two similar-level 8 wheeled APC/IFV with different base design is a good way to go...

Japan and Britain will cooperate in promoting a new communications network that does not rely on specific companies' infrastructure in the wake of China's increasing presence in the field, sources familiar with the case said Wednesday.
By using Open RAN, or Open Radio Access Network, which has industry-wide standards that enable its interoperability between multiple vendors' equipment for cellular wireless networks, the two countries aim to avoid a situation in which Huawei Technologies Co. and other Chinese players control the flow of information.
According to the sources, Japanese and British companies are expected to begin technology sharing in 2023. Major Japanese technology firms working to implement Open RAN include NEC Corp. and major mobile carrier NTT Docomo Inc.

Reported Mr. Masahisa Sato, foreign affairs and defense committee chairman of the ruling LDP party, the SPY-7 equipped Aegis ship will feature full ASW, AAW, cruising at 30+ knots with more than 200 VLS[maybe 300?]
It appears they looked at various options and chose a ship 210m/690ft length and with a large beam of 40 m / 131 ft [~20,000t] to give the stability to fit a very large/heavy array SPY-7 radar, surprised with its large beam that gives a l/b ratio of~ 5+ it can reach 30 knots, expect will require large power, planning for a small crew compliment of only 110, design and build in five tears
Assume main missiles will be the joint Japanese/US SM-3 IIA exo-atmospheric missiles and the SM-6 endo-atmospheric missile (one that remains within the earth's atmosphere, at an altitude below 100 km) and the with ability to counterattack with its new long range variant of the ~1,000 km Type 12 SSMs and in future a hypersonic missile in R&D. To fill all the 200+ VLS cells cost will be massive, £billion ?
PS Large BMD radars required for very high discrimination necessary to distinguish/target the warheads from decoys and nosecones etc of nuclear ballistic missiles, the US Navy have stated that radar sensitivity scales as a cube of the size of the radar aperture, and while improvements can be made to the T/R modules said this is a linear not a cubic relationship and only adds marginal capability on the order of +1 or 2 dB.

I would like think now they will be able to push for more with what has been happening recently - the T45 getting 24 CAMM in a few yes time ( 2026 ? onwards ) so will be able to load more longer range missiles - about time ! (could be better) & also the the T26 getting 48 CAMM alongside 24 mk41 from the outset is progress rather than vague " can be fitted with....at a later date " blah blahinch wrote: ↑01 Jan 2023, 20:03 I suspect when/if T83 comes to pass it will be as per usual under par in weapons load and ability against a real pear ,but with the headlines the most advanced the world bollox like they like to try to con the general public but not telling them we only have a couple and every other county even small ones have far bigger fleet lol,I really do think we are a show the flag no substance, fooling nobody military not the brilliant men an women in the forces but the clowns granting finance and dicision makers in this country, shame ,think the new Japanese missile destroyer will be an awesome piece of kit and the RN will be very envious

This figure says they are considering to make it more compact (the red notes). Just for clarity.
Re: JAPAN / 日本
Understood various options looked at and as you say included less expensive ones, presumably variant of the current Aegis Mayo class destroyers, but my understanding as said previously "Mr. Masahisa Sato, foreign affairs and defense committee chairman of the ruling LDP party, the SPY-7 equipped Aegis ship will feature full ASW, AAW, cruising at 30+ knots with more than 200 VLS [maybe 300?]" confirmed the choice of the larger option for the 20,000t AESW ship - we will see if and when contract placed.donald_of_tokyo wrote: ↑04 Jan 2023, 00:20This figure says they are considering to make it more compact (the red notes). Naval News 3rd Jan reported that IJN in addition to the two 20,000t AESW will also procure two updated Aegis Mayo class destroyers, making total of ten Aegis destroyers plus the two ASEWs.

The Japanese government plans to acquire up to 400 US-made Tomahawk cruise missiles to help boost counterstrike capabilities.
Members of the ruling coalition disclosed this during a directors' meeting of the Lower House budget committee on Monday.
They said 400 is the maximum number and the actual figure will be decided later.
