Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
180watt solar panel for recharging the stick on GPS devices.
Honestly tho, perhaps it some sort of comms array, although it seems a bit big.
My last thoughts are it could just be a badly rendered image.

Confirms what we've hoped/seen to be the direction of travel for Tempest:

TOKYO/LONDON, July 14 (Reuters) - Britain and Japan are close to an agreement to merge their next-generation Tempest and F-X fighter jet programmes, with the two countries aiming for a deal on a new joint project by year-end, three sources told Reuters.
It would be the first time Japan has sought a non-U.S. partner for a large military programme and the first major collaboration between Tokyo and London, going beyond what had been expected when industrial talks began five years ago.
Suspect we'll learn more between RIAT this weekend and Farnborough next week."The main thing that we are aiming for is to build a common jet, that may have small differences in design for each country," said another of the sources.
Britain could handle exports in Europe, while Japan would take care of the Asian market, another of the three sources said.

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
It would certainly be an interesting team up with a partner who would likely bring long term commitment and a whole host of technological know how... at the same time, how does this impact Sweden and Italy's involvement?Jensy wrote: ↑14 Jul 2022, 17:52 Confirms what we've hoped/seen to be the direction of travel for Tempest:

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
I'd say its get your skates on time for them...Italy have to a degree, but if they want a piece of the pie they're going to have to fully commit.
Have to wonder if the Spanish (and regrettably the German's) aren't watching with increasing interest....
Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
No no nothing to see here for the Germans or Spanish ,move on please

I'm quite curious how this is going down in D.C. too.Timmymagic wrote: ↑14 Jul 2022, 19:09 Have to wonder if the Spanish (and regrettably the German's) aren't watching with increasing interest....
Despite all the growing links, between close US allies, this can fundamentally be seen as a failure of the US aerospace industry. For whatever reason Japan chose not to pursue a partnership with LockMart.
As for the Germans. Having Japan's economic mass in Tempest does rather raise a question about what they could bring to the programme now, versus any negative influence they might bring.

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
Apart from a guarantee of some sales I don't think they could bring anything of note apart from some funding...but with each partner joining that becomes less and less necessary. Particularly as the lessons learned from Typhoon indicated that the partnership arrangment used and delays (primarily due to the German's) were the main drivers in cost increases throughout the programmes development. It's worth remembering that it was German opposition and delays that also slowed down and crippled Typhoon's development in service until the UK said enough was enough and went and did their own thing. That cost a lot of export sales...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
Hope this happens. With Japan on board, Tempest will literally take off, it will Bring huge trade knock ons and it means we don't need to involve anyone else.
Too many cooks and all that.

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
Design and certification of aircraft is not a simple task. That’s the industrial benefits you would get from European partners principally airbus and which you do not get with Japan.
Why would Japan turn away from American aerospace partners is the same reason everyone else bar Israel have sovereignty of capability and integration.
Can’t see us working German or Spain tbh.

Good to see positive news on Tempest - i do truly hope that Sweden and Italy continue. Given the recent UK / Sweden(+Finland) defence pact - i suspect they will continue their involvement. Italy is less predictable to me.

The Joint New Air-to-Air Missile collaboration must be going well if the Japanese are willing to join our jet programs together.
Crazy to think this is going to happen.

I suspect the UK-Japan tie-up is the significant news...but it could be this...

Good stuff, good to keep the momentum we seem to have with the program going.

I imagine that this is the telegraph getting mixed up.

edit: It has been fixed. The defence giant will develop a sixth-generation warplane to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon. The flying prototype will be a venture between BAE and the Ministry of Defence – separate to the wider Tempest programme, which also involves Italy's Leonardo.

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
Wouldn't be the first time!
Pure speculation, but could be that BAE as the lead prime are going to be focused on developing an airframe whilst the other partners focus elsewhere, for example Leonardo with the Excalibur test aircraft and Saab on the design and fabrication.
Alignment with Japan could well mean that, much like the ACA, we end up merging design features from different demonstrators based on their fitness for purpose.
