Reference is to the lighter frigate, not the Type 26, I'm afraid. Much as it'd be wonderful elsewise.

I think if the new frigate is still a lighter real frigate, rather than a light frigate, and build more of them it would still be wonderful.RetroSicotte wrote:Reference is to the lighter frigate, not the Type 26, I'm afraid. Much as it'd be wonderful elsewise.
8 x ASW
8 x GP
8 x AAW (maybe in the future). That would look very nice

For sure it is. The barrel looks like the 155mm of the AS90, but with weird extra bits beneath. I wonder if, for whatever reason, we are seeing a CGI of the aborted Third Gen Maritime Fire system mating a modified MK8 Mod 1 turret with the 155mm gun.
You might also know me as Liger30, from that great forum than MP.net was.

Agree; they did have a complete thing (with the turret, for test firing

Looks like a water-cooled gun over a smaller-caliber barrel? I've seen concepts of multi-caliber naval mounts before but not at this scale.xav wrote: The main gun in the illustration looks strange to me
Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
Does the T26 have at some point the ability to deploy items like rail guns and laser type weapong certainly B.A.E have been involved in this development and Admiral Zambellas has made some comments on this but is it a question of energy storage ,Im admitting of course not to know the mechanics of what would be required for a ship this size .

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
The US navy's laser system uses its own little diesel generator, its a complete modular system with weapon, optics, cooling, power supply and controls built in. In such a system it makes little difference what platform its on. A similar system could easily be bolted on to the T26.seaspear wrote:Does the T26 have at some point the ability to deploy items like rail guns and laser type weapong certainly
Rail guns are another matter. Each round requires 30 Megajoules of energy, so a rate of 10 rounds a minute will require 5MW, adjust for losses in the system and that's a substantial amount. On diesel alone the T26 can generate 10 Megawatts and that also has to power the whole ship. An in service rail gun may be even more powerful so you are probably over the capacity the T26 can generate on diesel, so it seems unlikely we will see a rail gun on the T26. The T45 with fully electric propulsion would seem like a much more likely candidate in a mid life upgrade.

D was used dor the Daring class T45 destoyers - D for destroyer too.

I don't know, maybe Flora might be a good name if we could get Unilever to sponsor it with all that margarine money.Enigmatically wrote:SKB wrote:They are likely to be names beginning to be the letter 'F'

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
Okay, so I presume that with only 8 T26, they will all be based in Portsmouth. But what does this mean for Devonport? They will really need to get every single one of the new GP frigates to keep the base viable.

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
Now this information is old however I heard last year the Devonport PM (Oliver Colvile) say that Plymouth would get AT LEAST 7 T26s. I guess that figure still stands but as a mix of T31 and T26. Plymouth needs more than 7 to make up with the loss of the subs. (7 is the current number of T23s) So maybe 4 T26 and 5 T31.WhitestElephant wrote:Okay, so I presume that with only 8 T26, they will all be based in Portsmouth. But what does this mean for Devonport? I'd like to see them as town or county class with names from all over the United kingdom on the T26

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
Didn't the MoD stop doing that after they realised there weren't enough ships to give everyone representation with the cities/towns/counties? Or was that just the destroyers?marktigger wrote:I'd like to see them as town or county class with names from all over the United kingdom on the T26
Also some more nice "F" names:
Falkland (could the FI gov't contribute to her upkeep and construction like Australia & NZ did with their ww1 battlecruisers? )
Fencer
Firebrand
Frobisher
Fulmar
Furnace
"G" names for FLF:
Gibraltar
Gurkha
Galatea
Gallant
Gladiator
Grafton
Grappler

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
part of the reason to give them geographic names is to help reconnect the Navy with the country because to many people there is little or no connection especially as the armed forces are now so small.
Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
My guess is pretty much a rerun on the Type 42 names starting with Edinburgh.marktigger wrote:I'd like to see them as town or county class with names from all over the United kingdom on the T26

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
Some one more familiar with the workings of the Ship Naming and Badges Committee will know better than I, but it's never seemed to me that the Royal Navy is particularly rigorous in it's application of an alphabetical cycle. That said, if they didn't want to go with Edinburgh they could always go with Glasgow or Gloucester.

I suppose an advantage of splitting the frigate classes is it makes it easier to find good names so we don't end up with HMS Fairy
