Boeing P-8A Poseidon (MRA Mk.1) (RAF)
Re: Boeing P-8A Poseidon (MRA Mk.1) (RAF)
Transfer them to the Royal Navy simples - would of been good advertising for the current film

If so, then they would have to be kicking up because the second QEC Carrier is not named Prince of Scotland ? Would they really want to pick an argument with Wales ?
Re: Boeing P-8A Poseidon (MRA Mk.1) (RAF)
PoW should have the alternate name HMS (Duke of) Rothesay when sailing in Scottish waters just like the real Prince of Wales.Scimitar54 wrote:If so, then they would have to be kicking up because the second QEC Carrier is not named Prince of Scotland ? I suppose if you really wanted to cause an upset, rename PoW HMS Robert the Bruce, with the Her Majesty's Ship part causing the hurt!

If it is possible to name one off the P8's still to come , an appropriate one would be John Cruickshank VC , coastal command pilot , with 210 Squadron , and now aged 101 , the last VC off WW2.

Which I guess means no.7 (ZP807) arrived recently...unannounced, which is weird.Timmymagic wrote:Number 8 has arrived in the UK.

USN will be funding Boeing in the new year to integrate the Lockheed LRASM on their 128 P-8A Poseidon's which presume will replace the ability to launch Harpoon's.
Always wonder about the ability of P-8A survivability to launch anti-ship missiles as it makes for a big target for long range surface and air launched AA missiles eg Chinese PL-15 and Russian R-37M equivalents to the Meteor and the new US AIM-260

If P-8A is operating within range of the Chinese mainland then you can bet your boots she's going to be accompanied by a whole bunch of friends. Moreover if it's looking like something is going to go after it, then it'll withdraw the same way all the other big aircraft have done over the decades. She's not going to be flying in places where there's a decent chance she'll be shot at.
Realistically the USN want more missiles in the air as the B-1 begins to be withdrawn from service, putting LRASM on P-8 is a reasonable short term action to try ease the pressure.

Re: Boeing P-8A Poseidon (MRA Mk.1) (RAF)
Seeing the P-8 can detect & identify ships from a long way away, seems sensible to give them a way to sink them. Not sure why any rational person would question that.

P-8A survivability in anti-ship mission
The CSBA think tank did a study for Congress in 2020 "Five Priorities for the Air Force's Future Combat Air Force" 94 pp, one para headed 'Stealth Will Be the Price of Admission for Operations in Contested Environments'.
Note the P-8A/737 is not a stealth aircraft so the question becomes would the RAF risk them (they only have the very limited number of nine for its primary ASW mission - USN has 128) in a secondary mission role to launch anti-ship missiles in a contested environment with a very high probability they would not survive, so the follow up question is it a priority for the RAF find the funds to equip the P-8As with anti-ship missiles for use in a non threatening environment?

Re: Boeing P-8A Poseidon (MRA Mk.1) (RAF)
My comment was on why the USN are doing it in response to your comment WRT P-8A survivability. They're going to be waist deep in contested environment CONOP planning so if they think putting LRASM on P-8A is a good idea, they probably have some idea how to use them without getting shot to bits. The US are much more invested in networked sensor-shooter capabilities than the UK so there's probably some value in having LRASM in the air on-call.
For the RAF it would probably be useful, but then again a lot of things are so a priority? Nope.

What's that got to do with the price of bread?NickC wrote: ↑04 Dec 2021, 13:04 P-8A survivability in anti-ship mission

P-8's hunting submarines doesn't happen in a "contested environment" so why would hunting surface ships be any different? Quite obviously they wouldn't go hunting for aircraft carriers. Well, obvious to most of us.
Re: Boeing P-8A Poseidon (MRA Mk.1) (RAF)
Well they did say Harpoons were on the shopping list for the RAF P-8's so maybe higher than we think. But, as you say, probably not high enough for LRASM which are rather pricey.Defiance wrote: ↑04 Dec 2021, 14:02 My comment was on why the USN are doing it in response to your comment WRT P-8A survivability. The RAF are probably hoping the RN will buy some they can "Borrow"!

The final P-8 has just landed at RAF Lossiemouth after a delivery flight from Seattle.

I do hope that this turns out to be “the final aircraft of the first batch” and not the “final aircraft”!

How many more do you think we need? Interesting with it being an open production line we could always add 1 on every few years.
Its just good we now have our MPA back up and running in force, unnerving few years without it. Now lets see how we can build upon it, maybe new weapons or equipment maybe?

Re: Boeing P-8A Poseidon (MRA Mk.1) (RAF)
They don’t have the people or budget to operate what they have bought never mind more.
Re: Boeing P-8A Poseidon (MRA Mk.1) (RAF)
Mate of mine working on them at Lossie still insists they're ideally looking for at least 3 more.
